May 28, 2003 - EDH cyclist falls over cliff, dies

By JESSICA R. GREEN Staff writer

SALMON FALLS - Monday a Serrano resident fell 100 feet to his death when he tumbled over a steep ledge bordering a trail near Salmon Falls Bridge he was biking on with his wife, according to deputy Scott Stewart of the El Dorado County Sheriff's Department.

Arthur "Eddie" Edwin Harvey, 30, of El Dorado Hills, died instantly from major injuries to his head and neck after apparently losing ground while riding on a narrow piece of the trail, said Stewart.

Friends and family are "in shock" over the death of a man they describe as a "computer genius" and "great guy who had nothing but friends."

"He had just taken up mountain biking, it was not something he did on a regular basis," said his best friend, Scott Hamilton.

His wife, Ann "Christy" Harvey, was riding about a minute behind him, she told responding emergency services. When she rounded a curve to the spot her husband had gone over, she saw a man over the side and went down to help him, not realizing it was her husband.

The location of the fall was around 1,500 yards south of Salmon Falls Bridge, said Stewart.

He was lying motionless on the rocks, she told deputies. When she rolled him over she yelled to a boat on Folsom Lake below to call 911.

The two would have celebrated their third wedding anniversary next month, said Hamilton.

Many mountain bikers, including off duty medical personnel attempted to save him, to no avail, said Stewart. The area where Harvey fell is an unmaintained portion of the trail, he added.

Two off-duty doctors attempted to save Harvey by performing CPR, but there was no response, state sheriff's reports.

El Dorado Hills Fire Department responded to the scene and pronounced Harvey dead, a California Highway Patrol Helicopter lifted him away from the scene after rescue teams pulled him to the top of the embankment.

Harvey was a networking programmer at Hewlett-Packard in Roseville and he had lived in El Dorado Hills for eight years.

Harvey was born in Germany, where he lived until he was 4. He then traveled "extensively" before settling in the El Dorado Hills area eight years ago, said Hamilton. Harvey graduated from California State University, Sacramento, magna cum laud in 2000. He played the guitar and conga, the latter in a band called "Minglewood" which performed in coffee houses around El Dorado Hills, said Hamilton.

Officials from the Folsom Lake Recreation Department were not available for comment.

"Officials from the Folsom Lake Recreation Department were not available for comment." The only time those guys are around is when you don't pay the $2 for parking.

That sucks. I wonder what part of the trail he was on if it was "unmaintained"?

I'm guessing near the rock slabRoger--

either going up the hill before it or coming down it.

Be careful out there.
My guess too.....isn't there a short detour there now?.....nmEbo

Yep, but it requires climbingRoger__

and that lower trail coming and going looks inviting for many. Really sad, my thoughts are with his wife and his family.
There's a bit of dirt to the left of the slab...andy f.

right by the edge. I've seen people try that route, thinking it's easier than just blasting up the slab. Riding up the slab is actaully way easier because you don't have to turn on your way up. It would be really easy to fall over the edge if you stalled out going up that way.
Was he wearing a helmet ?Spiff

It is amazing the number of cyclists you see on that trail riding without a helmet.

It says he fell 100'. What would a helmet do??? nmbhutata

I know, oh master of the obvious :)

And yes, there are indeed a myriad of circunstances on a crash where a helmet would not make a difference.

I was just curious if he was wearing a helmet, (that if he was riding a bike that day) - but now that you mentioned I realized I dont know if he was biking or hiking.

A bunch of you are real class acts?JHK

What a tragedy. My thoughts go out to the family. A guy falls to his death while mountain biking and a bunch of you come flying in with your smart a$$ comments as usual. I think many of you spend to much time here. When the subject is a guy falling to his death and you are complaining about permits I think you are a jerk.
