Friday poll - What is your favourite beer? (kinda OT)(133 posts)

Friday poll - What is your favourite beer? (kinda OT)GirchyGirchy
May 30, 2003 3:33 AM
Having recently reached that magical age where the government thinks we're old enough to drink responsibly, I'm looking to expand my horizons in the world of beer. I know the vast majority on here seems to enjoy a frosty brew, so I'm just wondering what everyone's favourite beer is.

There's a pretty good store around here which carries some of the lesser-known brands, so maybe some of your recommendations will be available there. Thanks everybody, and have a wonderful weekend!

Obligatory mtb content: it's been raining. A lot. My bike's sitting in the living room. I could die.

The UK's favourite lager...Chris Lopez
May 30, 2003 3:47 AM
Is definately Stella Artois, personally I avoid like a bad case of genital herpes. It's extraordinary ability to get you completley munted after only a few pints is legendary, thus it had been christened with many nicknames such as 'Nelson' (as in Nelson Mandella - Stella (bit of ryhming slang for you)), 'Rocket Fuel' or my personal favourite which is 'Wife Beater'.

Personally the nicest brew I have tasted but which isn't readily available in the UK is Carlton Cold which is an Aussie tipple.

Usually I make do with Carlsberg.

being the beer snob that I am, here are a few of my favorites:

1. Bridgeport IPA

2. Deschutes Black Butte Porter

3. Full Sail: IPA, Nut brown

4. Rogue: Shakespear Stout, Oregon Golden Ale, Dead Guy, and Old Crustacean (barleywine)

5. Sierra Nevada Golden Ale (did they really stop making this? anyone know where to find it on tap?) SN Pale ale is the ol' standby.

6. Mogollon Apache Trout Stout

7. Oak Creek Nut Brown Ale

Ok, notice the top 4 are Oregon brewers, my home state for the first 23 years of life, the last 2 are from Flagstaff (my new home) and Sedona, respectively. Cheers!!

My favorite beer; probably the finest brew on earth out of the tap. The bottles are merely ok, but the cans are almost as good as the keg, since they're those cans with the special device inside. Buy a 4 pack today!

Imports and domestics. (I never get tired of that one.)

Actually, it depends on the time of year for me. Being in the middle of nowhere means I can't be the beer snob I was in the city. Warmer weather is now Corona-time. When I get back to the city I'll pick up some micros to hold me over, and I usually go for some IPA's regardless of season. Rogue's is great, as is Victory's Hop Devil. Victory's Old Horizontal is a knock-out Strong Ale for wintertime fun. And of course I have to give a nod to my favorite Belgians- Stella Artois for warm weather and Delirium Tremons for cold weather.

Mmmm, beer.

Peg leg -- can you affix a SPD cleat to the end of it?

Parrot -- only if the dogs don't eat it.

A cutlass -- chicks with swords are cool.

A sash -- pretty much a no-brainer.

Flintlock pistol -- may have a prop around here.

And of course a curly 'stache!

So...looking forward to the new "Pirates of the Carribean" movie? Saw a trailer for it last week, looks like fun.

Peg leg -- can you affix a SPD cleat to the end of it? Um, no. Then I'd have one leg longer than the other and that would really mess with my seat height.

Parrot -- only if the dogs don't eat it. Check. Is plush ok?

A cutlass -- chicks with swords are cool. Check. Told ya I was a Pirate ;-)

A sash -- pretty much a no-brainer. Check. Simple.

Flintlock pistol -- may have a prop around here. Check. See cutlass comment above.

And of course a curly 'stache! I don't think so. The name's Pirate Girl, not Pirate Dude.

Thanks for asking. Yeah, the racing. Well, all was well until this month. Had my first crash due to a rear brake lever getting hung up in a corner. Minor lowside. A week later I was racing in Vegas and the last race of the day an expert took me out of my amateur race. He was lapping me and didn't pass me cleanly. He smacked into my right arm, and the blow was enough to toss the bike out from under me. A 75 mph lowside that I ended up tumbling through the gravel. I'm ok, just bruised up and crash damage to the bike, helmet, and leathers. I'm still extremely pissed at that guy.

Here's our team's racing webpage for more info:

Click on the Bullseye link and you can download all of our monthly race reports in PDF. I should have this month's out soon.

Good news is, I'm currently points leader in Super Singles and AM Lightweight Sportsman in the Southwest and Pacific regions of the Championship Cup Series. If I hang on to that, that'll be 4 regional championships my first year of racing. I'm going to the Race of Champions at Daytona in October to compete for a national title!

Basically all I've tried is Bud, Heineken, and Michelob. I tend to prefer liquor or Smirnoff Ice kinda deals. Which is why I'm asking this question...I just don't think I've found the right beer, and I wanted suggestions.

I've never really been much of a drinker anyway. My freshman year at Ohio State, I found it funnier to watch the drinkers get caught by my RA, or laugh at the guy next door trying to kiss my rommate (a guy also), or watch my roommate toss his cookies on his computer because he "thought it was a trashcan."

Moose Drool and its peculiar popularitygonzostrike
May 30, 2003 10:48 AM
I think that if Big Sky called their brown ale something like "Montana Brown" it wouldn't be so popular. The beer's flavor is nothing extraordinary. However, its name conjures something almost ludicrous - drinking a moose's drool. That seals its popularity for some folks.

Big Sky's "Powder Hound" ale is much better, more complex, more tasty, more refreshing.

However, Missoula's best brewery (and probably Montana's best brewery for all-round selection/quality) is Kettle House Brewing Co. Kettle House also has a provocatively named pair of beers, which are a porter and a pale ale. The porter is called "Olde Bongwater" and the pale ale is called "Fresh Bongwater." Both are quite tasty, interesting beers. My favorite Kettle House brew is the Gingseng Pale Ale.

Any beer made by the sweetwater brewing company in Atlanta GA is the nectar of the gods. Any brew made by some good ole' southern wasters has to be good. Of special note is their Exodous Porter. Enjoy one of these after a good ride and you will not be dissappointed.

New Belgian's Fat Tire Ale

Mogollon's Wapiti Amber

Oak Creek's Nut Brown

Always a good way to start an Eastbound road trip.

Otherwise, Chimay on tap or Stone Arrogant Bastard at Father's Office in Santa Monica to wash down those amazing burgers.

So many beers, so little time to try them..

Guinness is always good!

Anything from New Belgium is good too, especially Fat Tire and 1554 Black Ale, Thanks JD!

The local stuff is good too..

Most of it has a 4% Alcohol content.

Squatters Full Suspension Pale Ale is good!

Kings Peak Porter is good too, from Uintah.

Brian

You ride one for me, I'll drink..

I went to Moab with a guy who did AZSF and who made this incredible Porter. The stuff was great...I forgot all about that (if it's not him, there is this guy named James who went to AZSF who makes an incredible Porter).

Mike Walker, beermeister extraordinaire. That's the first homebrew I think I'd pay good money to drink from a tap. Daaang that was yummy.

But then again I choose beer like wine or food...

If I like it, that's good enough for me.

All the brew I tasted on that trip was excellent.

Some I only know from the taste as they had no labels.

BTW Brian...great subject for a poll in this crowd.

Great topic, seriously.

At home, hanging, working on bike, the standard-bearer is Sam Adams Lager, or any home-brew thats in the keg.

Eating a nice mean, Guiness or Murphy's Irish Stout all the way.

After a ride, on a hot day, is a great time for a lighter, wheat, summer ale, like Sam Adams Summer, Geary's Summer, Shipyard Summer, or Gritty McDuff's Brown Ale.

mmmmmm, beer.....

Obligatory mtb content update: it's NICE outside, it's drying up, and I'm headin' to the trail after work. There is a God, and He is good.

Rogue Dead Guy Ale. Most of the stuff from the North Coast Brewing Co. in Ft. Bragg, CA is also good, especially the Acme Brown Ale.

I can't. When in Germany, I always drink plenty of Koenig Pilsner, Paulaner and Franziskaner dark and light hefeweizens, which you can buy imported in the US but taste horrible, they need to be tasted fresh. I have yet to try a good weizen in the US, something microbrewers always attempt and never get right.

I mostly drink ales from the half dozen breweries in my area in VA, and my own batches of homebrew, but I'll sometimes buy Saranac samplers (caramel porter isn't half bad), Sierra Nevada, and Anchor (Liberty ale is great and their porter is good too). Right now I've got a growler full of barleywine.

I suggest you visit any ocal breweries and try some of everything. Get a growler if they sell 'em and fill up regularly. You can't go wrong with Saranac or Rock Creek sampler cases either if your local grocer carries them. But watch out, good beer really packs on the pounds before you know it.
well, not really...GirchyGirchy

...it'd probably be taking an equal amount of weight from my wallet at the same time. I can't afford too much, so I don't think I'll buy enough to get chubby on.

For some reason, I never got into the heavier beers. I've always like Mexican beer. I'm no conissour (sp?) of beer, but that's what I keep in my fridge. A little lime in there and I'm happy.

Could be worse, could be Mickey's Big Mouth or St. Ides.
