Some ?'s for potential Slatyfork attendees...(13 posts)

Some ?'s for potential Slatyfork attendees...davis
May 30, 2003 3:46 AM
Just looked at the calendar and realized we're just 60 days away from the first Slatyfork gathering. I've been wondering about some different things and figured it would be best to put these questions out there and get your opinions.

#1) How many of you are still planning on coming? I've heard (in varying degrees of commitment) from: Bikebreath, Crashanburn, MongooseMan, Mtbmon, Chili, Cleatgrrl, MTBIrv, Lidarman, John Smittle, ThadtheTroll, CA & TT, and Red Ascent. Anyone else? Are you bringing just yorselves or others as well? If bringing others, any idea on how large yor party may be?

#2) Maps. The best map of the area is the one put out by Elk River Touring Center, but they're not free. I think they charge about $9 each, but perhaps they'd cut me a volume discount break. There are less detailed maps available for free from the forest service. If we do group rides, the maps aren't that important, and I do have 3 or 4 of the ERTC maps now. Should I bother going to ERTC and talk to Gil or should I just start scarfing up the freebies whenever the opportunity presents itself?

#3) The rides. Do I need to plan alternative rides for different levels of riders? Most of the rides I have planned in my head have road climbs of 1000' to 1200' and are loaded with technical singletrack. Can't do anything about the technical singletrack, but shuttle options could be made for anyone not wanting to grind out the climbs. I'm planning rides that leave from the campground, but some will be better if we shuttle to certain points to start the rides. Is this a major problem for anyone? No rides would require more than 10 or 15 minutes in the vehicle unless we hop over to the Rimel area which would be about 30 minutes, so I'm thinking about crossing that one of off the list.

#4) How do you feel about green chile and chicken enchiladas? If the numbers of attendees are low enough, I might be persuaded to prepare a hundred or so for a dinner at our place one night. We can get to and from Tea Creek via forest service and one lane roads, no highways needed.

#5) Thursday. For those arriving Thursday, any idea what time you may be rolling in? I'd like to get a good ride in Thursday and take as many folks as possible along.

I'm sure I have many other forgotten questions, so I'll try to post them as they come up in the future. Thanks for any input you may have. I forgot who asked, but yes, if you feel like dragging a road bike to a MTB gathering the Scenic Highway is an excellent road ride.

Wow! only 60 days away. The pic above is from the davis gathering last year, which i finally just developed. I'm the good looking guy hiding behind the camera. To answer your questions specifically:

1. Definitely count me in still. As of now, I'm coming solo. If I were to bring along somebody it would be no more than one person as my truck only fits two.

2. Maps. I'm a map guy, which might have something to do with my useless (to me)Geography degree. Guess I picked something up from it. If it's the nice water/tear proof map, I'd love to have one. I usually pick up a map of most places I go. I was planning on stopping at Black Water Bikes to pick up the nice water/tear proof map of mt. biking in Pocahontas Co. anyway, which I'll probably still do.

3. NO need for a shuttle here. I'll suffer my way to the top. Hopefully between now and then I'll get on my bike and get back in shape. I love technical enchiladas.

4. Ok, it's still early and I'm on my first cup of coffee. You get the idea. Mmmmmm....enchiliadas. Can I persuade you to throw a few hot chiles in a few? I'll have at least one bottle of hot sauce on hand though if not.

5. Hmmm...wasn't planning on leaving Thursday, but it's a good excuse to miss even more work. If so, I can accomdate to whatever shedule best fits the rest.

Davis, drop me an email. I'd be up for meeting somewhere in between and riding over the course of the summer, say the plantaion trail or something?

or are you just saying that 'cause of his onanistic behavior in the pic 8^)

Yeah, I know it's Ricky. You think I'd make a harsh comment like that about some random dude in a pic if I didn't know he had a sense of humor?

Just kidding...

#1 I'm still planning on showing up...(#5)on Thursday. I'd be a fool to guess when that would be, this far out. I think I'm coming solo, maybe one buddy, but that would be all.

#2 I may have a map already from a past visit. Like Chili, I will buy one, if it turns out I don't have one. I'm kind of a map freak.

#3 I don't have much climbing base, but I think I'd like to do one of the climbs and shuttle the rest. I know, I know, I'm gonna be ridiculed by the others, but if I do all the climbs I'll be cooked before the end of the weekend.

#4 Every time I say I like medium hot I get burned, [ yes, pun], by people who like it super hot. So make mine mild and it will work out find.

Bb, [ ...or maybe MTBIrv will want company on the daily shuttle. ]

May be coming with me, its still unknown at this point. It could be up to 4 total but i will not know until about a week ahead of time.

I will pedal my RM7, no shuttles allowed for this 49yr old.

I do not know which day we will get there, hotter is better, and we have been so lost up there that we now do not need maps.......maybe the snakehandlers will save us from being lost...

#1 Still planning on being there.

#2 If we can't get enough maps, I can help guide some. I've rode most of the trails around tea creak. I don't have ERTC map yet but I do have a ride map of the forest.

#3 I dread the thought of climbing from Tea Creak to the top of the mountain. I'll probably take my truck, anyone that can fit can ride with me. Don't worry, I used to being ridiculed.

#4 The menu sounds good to me, but I'm not riding behind you the next day!

#5 I don't think I'll make it for Thursday, probably just come after work on Friday (I'm only 40 minutes away).

1. I am still planning on it. Probably bringing 1 or 2 others max.

2. Maps?? We don't need no stinkin maps. (wwell, actually I do but I really wanted to way that). Seriously though, I'll stick with someone who knows where they are going.

3. MMMM, technical singletrack and some good climbs sound alright by me.

4. The food sounds phenomenal! You sure you wanna do all that???

5. I'll be a Friday arrival so Ill see y'all then.

I've been lurking for some time now but it is time to break the silence. A small Bama contingent has tenative plans to attend the shuffle. Now, on to your questions:

1) Two or three Bama boys have tentative plans for a road trip to the shuffle.

2) Maps are good. We ride slow.

3) Fok a shuttle.

4) Enchiladas are good.

5) Probably arrive thursday evening. Any night riding?

Looking forward to it.
