Cyclist dies at Salmon Fallsandy f.
May 30, 2003 7:30 AM
This past Monday, a cyclist fell to his death on the Darrington Trail, about 1500 feet from the Salmon Falls bridge. The article I read, in the local El Dorado Hills newspaper, was a bit vague about the exact location but I have a feeling it was just past the split between the high and low routes. He was new to MTBing, so I believe he took the low route and tried to ride up the narrow strip of dirt to the left of a short, steep rock face. His wife was a short distance behind and found him lying motionless below, in the rocks near the water's edge. Two other cyclists, who just happened to doctors, came along shortly after and tried CPR to no avail.

That's terrible. I wonder how many have died at that spot, I don't think he was the first... that's why there's a sign there that says to walk your bike. I really feel sorry for his wife, what an awful experience.
I'll think about him my next ride thereSteve Wolf

One of my favorite rides but there are a few sections at the beginning of the trail that only advanced riders should even try. On my first trip there my friend tried to ride where he shouldn't and he fell off the cliff. Fortunately he landed at the red arrow on the photo. I doubt that this poor soul rode the narrow section on the left in the bottom photo, that you are probably referring to. It is also *really* steep and rocky down the other side. The only other hairy section is at about 2:20 into the video below. As always, the helmet cam really flattens things out so it is a steep up and down on a very narrow section.

I was chicken for not being able to ride that section on Sunday.

Telling ya, it was all mental, and it was all about that cliff.

My Thoughts and prayers for the family.

Remember when I turned around and rode up the middle of the rock slab? Picture riding up that thin strip of dirt to the left instead. Or riding down on the far right edge. Your tire would only have to slip a couple of inches and you'd fall all the way to the lake.
THAT's exactly what ....ciclistagonzo

Kept me from getting relaxed enough to just ride it out, I saw you do it, and frankly I've done it before, just couldn't mentally relax enough. Ah well, no bigs, I showed up at the wedding sore but in one piece.

Plans for Sunday?

...a couple of rogues from FATRAC tried to block it from being ridden. Now it's even harder, and some folks are naturally gonna aim for the dirt strip on the edge.

Losers!

that is very sad, i hope the family is doing well.

my riding buddy actually fell there in the dark, but he was okay.

we need to realize sometimes things are harder than they seem, and not to try them.
