So I broke my helmet today...(14 posts)

So I broke my helmet today...GrahamKracker

The UCSC Cycling Club had a ride today at 530. We rode down to Hwy 9, and back up to campus on Uconn. At this point it boiled down to me and one other rider, the former president of the club and a bada$$ roadie. He was showing me a new trail, and we were going around a fallen tree right at the trailhead. There was some overhanging foliage. I keep a visor on my helmet so I can just face downwards and plow through leaves without them hitting me in the face. The problem occured when I did not see the 5" branch that was hiding behind the foliage, and slammed into it. Very luckily, it was only a glancing blow. If I hadn't ducked as much, I'm sure I would have caught it full on and been thrown violently from my bike and possibly hurt badly. I managed to finish the ride, as I had no other choice to get back home.

As it stands, I was lucky. I need to replace my helme, I have a splitting headache, and I feel a little bit stupid. Thanks for crash replacement.

Dude you should be going over the tree trunk not around it. Ramp it up with smaller logs and then get to it
If only that were possibleGrahamKracker

but the trail is not exactly what we would call sanctioned, and turning the log into a jump would attract unwanted attention to the fact that there is a trailhead there.
Did something like that last summer...Ricko

Didn't bust my helmet but jammed my neck pretty good...sukker hurt for weeks!

Good thing for helmets, I'd have been in a frikkin coma for weeks if I wasn't wearing one.
Glad to hear you're okay Graham...NMUncleMTB

Jumping logs is cool if you clear it. I did a endo attmepting a log jump on may 14th and landed right on my head.I finshed the ride but after the headache did not go away I went the hospital a couple of days ago to be checked out. The cat scan and neck xrays showed no broken bones or brain bleeding.(good news) I have what is called post concussion syndrome. I went throgh this before a couple of years ago. The headache is getting better but no riding for me for at least a month. My plan is to go for a full face helmet but don't know if they protect the head any better then the XC lid I was wearing? Don't go back to riding right untill you feel 100%. You don't want another concussion. Good luck
Mine was last september.Bhlaffy

Jumped a log landed on front wheel then head/sholder. Had a 3rd degree separation of the sholder. Now I have a permenent bump where my collar bone used to connect with my scapula. The scapula sticks up. The helmet I replaced.

PS Bell Xrays are nice and you can find last years for about $59.
Thanx NMGrahamKracker

Ok, so I didn't really break it. Someone drove over it. Lucky for me my head wasn't in it at the time. Also luck for me, some one had an extra helmet to loan me for the ride.

Crazy, uconn is fun. When do you guys normally ride? Other banana slugs might want to join you.

This was the ride that Bret put together for fri. He sent out that email to the Slug Cycling mailing list. I think a lot of people went downtown to Critical Mass instead, but I just had to ride on dirt. I don't exactly have the cash for the crash replacement right now, maybe I should have gone downtown....
