| BESTWAY TO INCREASE CLIMBING SPEED | kurtdb1 Aug 1, 2003 11:50 AM | | went on my local trail yesterday (so cal, aliso woods) at about 5:20 pm and as I'm climbing the first part of a short but steep climb, I round a small switchback to encounter a very unhappy DEEP RED RATTLESNAKE COILED AND RATTLING off to my right side about 2 feet away. I think I increased my climb time by about 15 seconds. |
| Best way to... | Samurai Cat! Aug 1, 2003 11:58 AM | | ...crap yourself, too :)
Another really good way to increase climbing speed (serious comment here) is doing climbs on road bikes. Oh my lord does that ever make a difference. |
| especially if... | deanna Aug 1, 2003 12:39 PM | | ...the roadie bike doesn't have granny gears. i found out the hard way just how steep a 17% grade can feel in a 39-23 combo. yuk. |
| 17%? Ack. | Samurai Cat! Aug 1, 2003 1:11 PM | | That's crazy :)
Incidentally, I snagged a 2001 Bianchi Giro bike (well, almost bike - no wheels) at a silent auction last night for a local (Boulder) fellow who'd had a skydiving accident and is now in a wheelchair. The things got a triple-front-ring setup... probably a breeze to climb in. I imagine it was a touring bike... the thing still has clunky flats with toe straps on it and a little round mirror on the left end of the bars. :P |
| fortunately... | deanna Aug 2, 2003 2:41 AM | | it wasn't very long! just seemed that way. 1st time i rode it, i was a bit wary as i'd been hearing rumors about this hill... starts out around 7% or so, not too bad. i was wondering what the big deal was! then i saw it. the gentle climb goes across a (4-lane state) hwy, then the fun began. it's only about 100yrds or so total distance, but rare is the time one can pedal across the hwy w/o stopping before, then again mid-way across. so needless to say it's made even more fun from a near stand still! on a good day my wimpy legs pedal the bike up around 6mph.
i am a speed demon.
look out lance! =) |
| LOL! My gf learned to bunnyhop in a similar way... | PmbH Aug 1, 2003 1:15 PM | | She was headed downhill, pretty fast, on a dirt trail in front of me, when she spotted a snake across the trail... She hopped it, having never hopped the bike before. It was pretty impressive. |
| that's what I need! | airwreck Aug 1, 2003 3:11 PM | | My training for the upcoming hill climb is making me realize how slow I am, Walt's post the other day about Lance's climbing speed has got me crunching the numbers and wondering how I'm going to increase my leg speed in the next two weeks.
So here is an update to my reply to Walt's earlier post. Did a climb, 3500 feet over 7 miles, one hour six minutes, grinding in my 30x27. Next day did a mellower climb, took 10 miles to gain 3500 feet, one hour fifteen minutes, I did notice that I completed 7 miles in the same amount of time, and no problem spinning 80 rpm. Granted on the longer climb I took it easy for the first couple miles, but still....
going to need quite a few snakes. |

Level 1 moose
Level 2 Bear
If you need more motivation after level 2..... damn |
