| Yo MESSENGERS...How'd you get started?.... | RetroG Aug 1, 2003 2:28 PM | | Just wondering. Thinking about it in D.C. I'm about ready to split big brother. |
| I just done showed up...... | Christine Aug 1, 2003 8:22 PM | | Seriously, messenger companies are used to high turnover, and just need warm bodies for the most part. Granted, many of the staff were more like baked bodies (judging from the lingering scent of pot) but they highly suggest you ride sober.
Brought my resume, but it was more of a formality- simply explain what kind of experience you have riding a bike. Show up on time when and where they ask, listen to the safety lecture, and bring picture ID. Then they provide the necessary gizmo and assume you have a bike and helmet and lock and bag.
Lock your seat to the frame, and put hose clamps on your quick releases. Go with the Kryptonite quad chain. An air horn is more effective than a bike bell. Enjoy scaring the crap out of pedestrians, but remember that the ones on cell phones won't jump out of the way like normal folk.
Above all, enjoy!!! The pay blows chunks but it's MUCH better than a stuffy cubicle from 9-5. |
| I applied the summer | PROGRE-SS Aug 2, 2003 4:56 AM | | after I graduated from high school and got a call a few weeks later asking if I still wanted the job. During the three days (yes three days) I worked as a messenger, I loved it. The freedom of riding all day, dodging cars and trucks and peds rocked!!!! The pay does blow unless your fast. I was making $30 per day. My mom hated that job and pulled some strings and got me into a summer student employment program at her work, making $15 per hour. |
| Aquire a smalltime heroin/crack habit, smoke cigs/weed.... | Sloppy Aug 4, 2003 8:24 AM | | get a FIXED gear bike so you look like you are having a painful bowel movement during the very rare instances you have to slow down
