Need some advice..

T'm headn to las vegas Aug 18 for a pool tournament (amateur)which will leave my mornings free for riding (I hope). I cant get to moab or fruita, but being from upstate SC I'm sure there's something out there near vegas worth riding! Anyway I could use some direction renting the bike (LBS) and finding nearby trails foe short morning rides. Thx fer the help y'all...

... talking to the guys at a shop called "Escape the City Streets". They do rentals and tours.

Best places to ride are outside a small town called Blue Diamond, its south west of Vegas. Maybe 10 minutes in a car from the south end of the main strip (Luxor, NY NY, MGM). The main loop on the south side of the road (forget the name) is around 13 miles total, with a 2.5 mile climb to start, and rolling fun after that. Nice 15 minute downhill brings you right back to the parking lot.

If you park on the right, in Blue Diamond next to the baseball field, there is an out and back that goes mainly west. Less climbing and only around 9-10 mile total.

There used to be a small shop in Blue Diamond, but I am not sure if it's still there since I haven't ridden there in a bit.

There is also some decent riding in Boulder City, but it's a little longer drive.

Stop by AJ Hackett Bungy next to Circus Circus for a 171 ft jump, and a dunk in the pool too. (shameless plug).

Good luck in the pool tourney.

Second the recommendation for "Escape the City Streets". I have rented from them for about five years now and never had a complaint! I am from the near the midlands (North Augusta) and you will love it out there. If you have more time try Red Rock Canyon as well!

Two of the places to ride are Bootleg Canyon http://www.bootlegcanyon.com and Blue Diamond. I am sure there are a few others but I don't know of them. I also can't comment on these two as I've never ridden there myself but plan to in the fall.

It can get HOT out there this time of year. I was just there this past weekend and it was only 104 in the afternoon. Early AM rides wouldn't be too bad as it's only in the 80's when the sun comes up.

Check the trail reviews here for vegas area trails and definately ask at the LBS.

Post what you experienced when you get back. I'd be anxious to hear about hte riding. I'll be spending more time there since my father and my wife's grandmother live there and we just had a new baby so many trips will be in the works.

good luck in the tournament too

There is a bike shop at blue diamond. Rented a Trek fuel 90, it was surprisingly good for the terrain. The climbs are gradual. and the 15 min descent is a hoot. Wish I had known about bootleg canyon, oh well maybe this january. Hydrate or die this time of year. Cheers. Jim

Head to Blue Diamond. There is a bike shop there called the Bike Outpost. There are 125 miles of single track there. All required info including maps here:

Come on! You know you aren't going to get to bed early in Vegas! I lived there and couldn't get to bed early.

I'd say pull the all nighter, sober up, ride, breakfast at IHOP, then crash for the day. It's to damn hot to do anything in the afternoon. Have fun.

There is riding all around vegas. You will want to try Boulder City for technical riding and some crazy ass downhill(great xc as well) and cottonwood (behind blue diamond) for miles and miles of xc.

There are maps for BC but Im unaware of any for cottonwood. Even though the trails are extensive it is impossible to get lost. Drop me an email if you need any more info at redmon42@cox.net

PS Gooseberry mesa is only 2.5 hours away and some of the best slickrock/singletrack riding in the country.

check out the three-mile-smile. Urban assult? At night in Vegas? And don't leave town without doing the Bigshot ride at the top of the Statosphere casino.

hey i used to ride mt charleston and it is good. there is a xc loop at high altitude (7000) and a 17 min shuttle run that is not as nice as bootleg canyon dh runs but has jumps, drops and singletrack and is at 6000 feet or so. 40 min nw of vegas. i highly recommend the shuttle, as it was fun in 2000 on any bike. escape the city streets should be able to get you there with directions. since it is at altitude, day riding at mt. charleston is like 85 degrees.
