WNC trip--Take 2!(15 posts)

WNC trip--Take 2!TexasMTBr
Aug 2, 2003 12:23 PM
After much begging and pleading, M-U-M decided to let me go on a ride with her and Hollis. Without them, I'd probably still be lost in the woods today. Thanks guys!!! Here they are gearing up for a day at Dupont:

The obligatory "Tourist Shot". Your's truly and MUM at the trail-head:

We came from here:

and went there:

and wound up here. Atop Bridal Vail Falls:

Hanging out under the falls. There seemed to be a lot less ground in the movie ;-)

MUM and Hollis relaxing by the falls before the long climb up Slickrock (that's Eastern for all you Moabers):

Here's Hollis making it look easy:

While I was taking my time soaking up the views (read: trying not to die) MUM says she's seen this before and bombs past:

MUM still not waiting for me:

But I beat them down!

While MUM decided to go get hammered in the pariking lot (j/k), Hollis and I took a short spin up Burnt Mtn.

Here's Hollis dropping in (STIL)

Day 2TexasMTBr
Aug 2, 2003 1:21 PM
Day two found MUM and myself taking a spin on what she calls the Bent Creek Putz Around. This Putz Around found us back at her house 4 hours later. I'd hate to see a long ride. Sheesh!!!

Entering the woods:

We met up with a few guys from Charlotte. The gentlman to the right is Mr. Murphey for any of you Small Brown Dog frequenters out there. Sorry, I don't remember the names of the other two guys:

Here's proof that Texans aren't that slow, I wasn't the last one to the top! :)

Here's MUM coming up one of the last big climgs. She's in the middle of the picture, so that should give a little idea of the depth. Still much STIL:

And finally, an artsy shot that I learned by reading Finch's posts:

STIL!!!! According to MUM, this is a bad spot in the trail that you find after coming around basically a blind curve. Many a biker have let their momentum carry them off this cliff. It was only 20 or 30 feet to the bottom. If you didn't hit a tree. I didn't see what the big deal was. ;-) If you look close enough, you can see skid marks at the edge:

Here's a nice shot of a valley spreading out below. There were many such views on this ride:

There's a waterfall here, I swear!!!

Here's a food plot planted by the forest service to attract wildlife. If this was Texas, this would be the view from your deer stand. :)

This was Lake Someindianname that made a great shot for the end of our long ride. Or it would have if I could have cut out the public beach. Never claimed I was a professional photographer.

Ending the sabbatical (non-mtb)TexasMTBr

No sabbatical would be complete without a pilgramige to the holy land.

Cameron indoor outhouse is close to the holy land. You missed it by only 8 miles ;)

A great ending to an even greater tripTexasMTBr

Spent the next week here recovering:

I just want to say thanks again to Tara, Sam and Garrett for making my adventure a great one. I'm not sure what I would have done without all or your help. See you all again in the not too distant future!

Try not to take pictures of biker women behind auto door windows next time. It distorts our MTB buffiness! 8)

Here's a link to some pics Hollis posted you may have missed.

New bike is up & running. I'll e-mail you that stuff later.

BTW: On the Tourist Scale, you rate and eleven. Enjoyed the weekend.

Thanks MUM. Had a wonderful time! Glad you saw the write-up, I was afraid it was going to get pushed down too far. I ran a search for Hollis's post a couple of days ago, I figured he would have posted by now. I now have that first picture as my wallpaper at work to prove that I am indeed "hardcore." ;-)

I bet that Pantera is a bad b!tch. Can't wait for the photos. Speaking of which, if you want hard copy doubles of my pics email me your address and I'll send them to you.

Until next time,

G
