Roof racks- locking feet necessary?Puzman

I'm going to buy a Thule roof rack, and was wondering if its worth the extra $30 for locking feet (i already have locking velo vise trays). Anyone ever had a rack stolen off their car?

I run with Thule rails unlocked on my car, and just slp on the rails when I'm heading to ride.

If you're planning on taking a road trip or heading to work with you bike on top, I would definately invest in the locks. Otherwise, you should be OK.
Is $30 worth the price of your racks?Schwinng

I own Yakima Lock Jaw roof racks and put on at least 1 lock per each piece that could otherwise be stolen from my car.

I figure if people are willing to break my car's locks and windows to steal a $300 stereo (hell, other idiots have broken into my buds' cars to steal their laundry!), they'd be willing to spend a few seconds to rip my roof racks if they're not locked to my car.

Locks? They're ALWAYS worth the money.

everyone who buys them, has a master key. Not sure about Thule, but my Yak rack, has locks on all towers, and all steel head mounts, but, the lock sets all come with the master key, to install and "REMOVE" the locks. Ive never had a problem, but I've given this much thought after a friend telling me that they had a whole rack, locks and all, stolen off the top of thier car from a parking lot.
Master key only works if locks are unlockedSpectre

...people will steal anything. Someone busted my window to steal an old jacket that was on my car seat...$200 for a new window and an afternoon wasted finding a shop to replace the window

spend the $30 bucks and never worry about someone stealing your expensive rack.
Spectre is right - on Yak & Thule, master key only works....Mackie

....when the lock is unlocked. So unless you were to leave the lock cores unlocked, the master will not do a crook any good.

Buy the locks.
Yes! Worth the piece of mind. Get them! NMDustinjl

I would definitely get the locks. It's probably possible for someone to steal the rack if they want to but it offers me piece of mind. I have used the rack with three rails of model Tour (the upright kind which locks the bike to the rack) for a year in Mexico City and no one stole them. ANd crime in Mexico City is REALLY high. Currently using the same setup in Stockholm, Sweden and have not had any problems so far.

Good luck
