| How do you tell when it is time to get a new bike? | Cabin Fever Aug 2, 2003 7:04 PM | | i am debating whether or not to wait till after this school year before i get a whole new bike or to bite the bullet and get it as soon as possible (which would require selling a recently purchased road bike that i'm not sure if i want to keep.) any thoughts? |
| My guage... | mtbbrian Aug 2, 2003 7:29 PM | | Whenever I buy a new bike, I also get a new hat, from the same manufacturer. So when the hat starts to look thread bear, worn, I figure it is time to get a new bike..
So, in early 2000, I bought a new bike, and now more than three years later the hat is starting to get worn out..
So I need to start saving money for a new bike...
Sounds silly, but it works for me..

| Need? | bungyfish Aug 2, 2003 8:21 PM | | or want? Big difference. I usually want a new bike of some type on a monthly basis. I need a new one, when I toast the old one and it's beyond repair.
My current ride is a 99 Trek, with 01 and 02 components on it. I like it a lot, but I would still love a nice XC fully. But I don't NEED it to be happy with my riding, so it will wait for a bit longer.
Good luck, and happy shopping....

| Need? ... Agreed.... | Fuelish Aug 3, 2003 1:11 PM | | Agree with bungy fish and crash test dummie ...."need" and "want" are two very different matters...if ya can afford and "want", get a new bike..."if it ain't broke, don't fix it" !!! Don't worry 'bout not havin' the "latest and greatest", as, L'n'G ain't the L'n'G for very long...it's a personal choice (depends on disposable income/actual "need" depending on one's riding conditions/whether yer married or nor - hehheh...) I'd just ride (and replace/upgrade as needed) what ya got until it dies...you win , in the long run :) |
| or perhaps... | The Weasel Aug 4, 2003 7:25 AM | | ...when you have no confindence in your current bike because you're pushing it beyond it's intended capabilities. You might be able to get some good deals now or in the coming months. When new year models arrive is becoming a bit confusing nowadays. |
