Can I use Flak Jacket brake housing for derailleurs?(6 posts)

Can I use Flak Jacket brake housing for derailleurs?bob

I'm building up a new Heckler and while I have plenty of Flak Jacket brake cable housing I am short of shifter housing. Any reason I shouldn't run the brake housing for shifting other than Avid would like me to buy more?

Brake cable and derailleur cable have different diameters. The cable housings themselves are constructed differently for differing forces. Using brake housing will screw up the precision of your indexed shifting.

I read the Sheldon Brown link and he states the shift housing consisting of bundled paralell wires should not be used for brake housing. But that is all Flak Jackets and most Jaguire is for both brakes and shifters.....bundled paralell wire. The only difference is the diameters of the housing and inner sleeve.
Yes, I do it and it works fine..(nm)ohpossum

Flak Jacket brake and derailleur housing is 100% identical, both are 5mm in diameter.

brake housing wrap is built wound...shift cable is smaller diameter and is wrapped straight. It'll work...but it won't work like it's 'sposed to...

Why use slack jackets anyway...they work great...for about a month...tossed all mine for QBP housing...works great, lasts a whole season.
