| sad news. | Carbnjunkie Nov 27, 2003 2:33 AM | | hey guys,
i wish i bought some cool carbon/kevlar/gunmetal/santacruz whatever and could report on it.
But, a friend of a friend i recently found out about passed away while riding his bike through san gabriel, calif. This was a hit and run, which, makes it even worse. I dont even think he fit any type of hardcore sterotype, just a guy who was riding his bike for fun one day.
(I honestly dont know the details, but makes me think, is it really safe to ride in urban areas?)
-and what is wrong with drivers today? how come no one can take any sort of responsiblity for their actions? I overheard someone today talking about how they saw a person get hit on their bike, and the guy ran off, luckily no one was hurt, but does this happen often?
sorry for the rant guys, just watch out and be safe.

| wow, I'm really sorry to hear that! | Kpicha Nov 27, 2003 4:17 AM | | I agree with you, what is wrong with drivers today that they don't take their responsibility seriously?! That's just really, really sad that the driver didn't help your friend and even worse that he lost his life b/c of it!
I'm truly sorry for your loss and I hope it doesn't weigh too heavily on you.

| wow, I'm really sorry to hear that! | andy e Nov 27, 2003 4:51 AM | | I am also sorry to hear of your friends passing. It is unfortunate to hear of another story of a senseless hit and run. What are motorists thinking? We had the same thing happen in our local club over the summer. Some guy driving a dually hauling a horse trailer hit this girl and sent her flying. Luckily, a local doctor saw the whole thing transpire and promptly called the authorities and administered first aid. Meanwhile the guy in the truck just took off. Come to find out later, the guy had no liscense, insurance and had been drinking.
I also have heard cyclist recieving much negative press on a local radio station, 105.1 out of Raleigh, North Carolina. The morning dj's were ranting and raving about how much of a pain and public nusiance that cyclists have become and how it would be fun to throw bottles and cans at them and to run them off of the road. Go figure.
Here is what we as cyclists can do. First, boycott all Clear Channel Communications radio stations. You can go to their or the FCCs web site to find the ones in your area. Secondly, make your voices heard by joining local cycling advocacy groups and clubs at a local level. Besides, you'll meet tons of like minded individuals who love to cycle.

| Right of Way | Hollywood Nov 27, 2003 6:58 AM | | sorry to hear - as a frequent commuter in L.A. it always sucks to realize (again) that you can get killed doing something so fun.
here's something I just read about in Dirt Rag #104. Interesting what they're doing with their "art". 300 of these since they began.

| my sympathy | mcgrupp Nov 27, 2003 8:02 AM | | Sorry to hear about another rider being hit while enjoying the pleasure of the road. It seems today that some drivers are not fit to be driving let alone take responsiblity for there actions. After so many close calls in my life I gave the road up years ago. Now that dirt and rock are my only barrier on the mountain bike I feel my safety is back in my own hands.
My other comment to this thread is one which Andy states we should boycott all Clear Channel stations in our areas.
Yes, the DJ in Raleigh was VERY wrong but is that the opinion of the Clear Channel corporation? I would hope and think not. Maybe I'm missing something in your blasting CCC for one morning fools comments? |
| A Tragedy | PR Nov 27, 2003 4:40 PM | | I'm very sorry to hear of the loss of another cyclist and friend. No matter who it is, it's tough to hear of someone who lost their life because of a driver who just doesn't care about anyone but themselves.
In response to the Clear Channel Communications question... Though I would imagine that the same opinion isn't held by the powers that be at CCC, they do choose to employ someone who urges violence against others for no apparent reason. It sounds similar to the situation that happened in the Cleveland area several months ago where several Dj's urged thousands of motorists to attack cyclists simply because they didn't like sharing the road. Though these Ohio DJ's were reprimanded after thousands of complaint letters from cyclists, they kept their jobs. Reccomending sensless violence is a clear abuse of power as well as a violation of FCC regulations. Of course a company like CCC is too big to get any sort of notable reprimand from the FCC and they will go on employing fat, ignorant radio faces that would never understand why we, grown adults, choose to take part in a sport that they gave up when they got their drivers licenses. |

Helping small business is the only way to go in this time of global domination. That's why I still pay the price and shop at Mcguckins Hardware.
Very interesting getting these different points of view of Clear Channel Communication.
Yes, KBFR rules the air but does this bias against CCC mean I can't enjoy my local CC music concerts too?
I already know what your gonna say,
buy the CD.
Thanks for the info |
| re: sad news. | logs Nov 27, 2003 9:26 AM | | it is really too bad that drivers don't have more respect for cyclists.
On the other hand, this is the best reason to be a mtn biker. |
| Sorry to hear that.... (mini rant) | pimpbot Nov 27, 2003 11:00 AM | | ... as a bike commuter myself, I see poor driving behavior every day, especially in Oakland. Okay, we all make mistakes, but this really bugs me the most.
It all comes down to people's motivations. It seems that for many people today, the motivation for not doing bad things is getting caught, rather than a want to do the right thing. Therefore, if they can get away with it the doing the wrong, selfish thing is okay. Any animal trainer will tell you that negative reinforcement only works for the short term, and makes for angry, mean, selfish animals.
I like the Joseph Campbell approach. He suggested that maybe the Bible (and I'm a Christain, but the thinking, left-wing liberal type, and I'm not suggesting that other Christains are not thinking, so flame as you wish) is a metaphor not for getting into 'heaven' by being a good person (that is, 'be good and God will reward you'), but for making this world into heaven by being good citizens and looking our for our fellow humans, and our environment. That is, do the right thing, not because in the end you will get a prize, and if you don't the big angry guy in the sky will smack you down, but do it because it makes this world a better place to be a part of, and everybody is happier, one little grain of sand at a time. |
| There's a lot of "idiots" out there... | aP Nov 27, 2003 12:30 PM | | And every one of them drives a car! Thats why I ride in the woods. Trees may be dumb, but they're not aggressive. A friend of mine was riding home from work in a residential neighborhood some years back. A motorist came up from behind and deliberately touched the front of his car to the bicycles back tire, pushing him off the road and breaking his arm. The driver thought it a great joke, my friend was lucky to survive. |
| ditto | Crank-a-Roo Nov 27, 2003 3:06 PM | | for a long time, I was actually scared to ride my bike on the road and, yes, I had a collision with a car many years ago. For 5 years, I locked up my road in the house and only rode it on the roller. I drove to all trail heads, no matter how close the trail is. It is sad, an I know. But, I just don't want to be dead.
My fear finally lifted earlier this year. |
| Being one who has been hit while riding... | Rollingbones Nov 27, 2003 7:48 PM | | ..I really, really hate to hear about this sort of thing. I find it truely amazing that people treat cyclists badly. I get it a lot commuting. I got "tagged" in Jan, 2001 by a bimbo parked pointed in the wrong direction and pulled ouit and blessed me with a collapsed lung and 4 broken ribs. The worse was the damage done to what was a brand new bike on it's maiden voyage. I consider myself to be lucky as 1. I survived, 2. tnere were no permanent injuries and 3. it happened right in front of her house so the hit and run thing was not possible. Every day is a blessing, especially when you get to ride. I've been somewhat dormat lately and am looking forward to swinging a leg again. Happy Thanksgiving!!!
