I got pissed off last night. I went down to one of the local watering holes in another town. I met up with some local pro roadies to watch a little basketball and have a few ales. I was surprised to see a rider there who has faded from the racing scene in the last year. He faded from the scene because he's addicted to drugs. Crack and cocaine to be exact. He looked good and healthy. He talked about getting a bike and making a comeback. That got me excited. Because this guy didn't beat the competition, he stomped it.

The guy had a talent for making other riders hurt. At one point in his career he raced for a former pro team with a guy named Lance and stood on the top step of the podium more than once. He was a real wildman and a bit uncontrollable and had to leave the former team after a confrontation with it's star. After that he raced for several smaller pro teams and made life miserable for most Nor Cal pros.

Later he was left without a ride and got a offer from a new team on the east coast. The new team never materialized so he was left without a team. That was the start of the free fall. Last I heard he was living on the street begging for money. I figured it was just a matter of time before I'd hear some really bad news about him. That's why it was a surprise to see him looking so healthy and optimistic at the bar last night.

I was excited until I found out he was on the lamb from a half-way house. I fear the free fall has started and the spiral is about to begin. How can a guy who can stomp some of the best in the world be taken down by a little rock of powder? What a freakin' waste of talent. I had to get it off my chest. Thanks for listening.

I hear ya. I have a brother and a very good friend who can't or won't see the light. It's real hard to watch it all unfold, knowing you can't do a damn thing about it. I've tried in both cases, but untill they want or ask for help, it's a waste of time. Drugs are a wonderful thing... what a f*ckin waste!

I hear ya. I'm no stranger to drugs. I moved away from "the wrong people" 20 years ago. I moved to the country and my life has been a bright star ever since. Hopefully the dude I'm talking about will do it too. You could tell he really missed the bike and wanted to race again. He was talking about past races, the courses, breakaways, stuff like that. That's the first sign of really wanting to quit. To me that kind of talent is a drug. A drug I want to take every day. Ride hard, love life.
