Coming Back From Injury.(7 posts)

Coming Back From Injury.Bikebreath.

I got hurt. Short [tired old] version, bad commuter crash in July screwed up my left wrist. First week in October, only weeks before the wrist got better I stepped on a tennis ball at dawn while running, twisted my right ankle and was on crutches for a week, [crutches hurt my wrist again].

Now it's been 6 months since I've done a mountain bike ride and it's going to be a long road back. I've had a few tame road rides, but I took a solo mtb ride on Saturday to begin the journey back. I just rode easy grassy hills in parks surrounding my house in the city. Tiny hills that were middle ring hills I had to do in granny and it felt like my lungs were going to explode. The real kicker was when I came to a hill with roots in it and although I was getting winded, I got off to walk, rather than be forced off and twist my ankle. As I walked the hill it soon became obvious I had to stop and rest. REST FROM WALKING THE BIKE. "Oh my", I thought, "this coming back is gonna be a BITCH!" Most out of shape I've been in, in 15 years.

Sunday I took a fast 3 mile walk that made my legs ache.

Monday I spun the exercise bike for 15 minutes, ran a mile, spun the bike again for another 15 minutes. It's the most I've sweat since my last run in late September, but it felt good, so I went to the basement and did a light round of weights. The best thing is my outlook is improving.

Bb, [ 2004 resolution: "I will not get hurt this year. ]

and I'm one too. got a leg wound on the heal. Glad to hear you're mending BB. I slacked off in early fall after being in the best shape in 20 years, by Xmas I was lard. I'm back in the saddle, and light weights too and fell way better.

by summer we should be able to drop them young bastidges, eh? Jim

.....Baby Steps. You know that with three months of steady and progressive exercise you'll be back in business doncha? Yep as we get older it gets harder and takes longer to return but we're light-years ahead of the terminal couch slugs.

We were playing around at work a few weeks ago with a new blood pressure/heart rate monitor and one of the smoking couch slugs who was 25 years my junior had a heart rate double what mine was and blood pressure through the roof.

You WILL be back. You have the tools.

Did the info have any effect on him?

I'm guessing not.

Do fire fighters have to do a regular fitness test?

Yes, his face drained when he saw the info. He re-tested himself about a half dozen times in the next half hour hoping for, I'll assume, a better reading.

But it's tough for most people to overcome the addiction to nicotine.

Do fire fighters have to do a regular fitness test?

Nope, Not at all.
May not get to post here much longer but.....Rev Bubba

But, I hope you come around in time for Jim Thorpe. Hell, maybe, just maybe, the sun will shine. Nah,that won't happen but maybe it will be warm.

Talk of getting old. I pulled a muscle in my shoulder just watching television last night. Age sucks. Makes you think that the alternative might not be so bad.

:)
watching TV...eh?Slick

I threw my back out playing a game of chess!! You're right.."Age Sucks"..but it does beat the alternative!
