| surly crosscheck vs karate monkey.... | mcd Sep 24, 2002 2:24 PM | | I was about to buy a crosscheck when I heard about the new karate monkey... I have just moved to a place with lots of empty paved, and unpaved roads, but almost 0 singletrack. After being here a few months I narrowed my bike choices down to a cx bike, then the surly. However, I have only the cash to purchase the bike as is, no cash left over for dif wheelsets, bars, shifters etc...and i've been mtbing for 15 years and feel little love for drop bars, and also, hope only to be in this location for a couple of years, so I want something I can keep on using. Anyway, the question is what gearing comes on the crosscheck, and how big a tire can i really get on the stock wheelset vs. what will the karate monkey come with, and what will be the smallest tire that will fit on those rims? Sorry about the longwinded story...thanks... |
| re: surly crosscheck vs karate monkey.... | the Messassin Sep 25, 2002 2:15 PM | | Check out the "beginners ups session" and "faster than your mom" series of threads below to see my crosscheck--29" notos just fit the stock bike and fork, therefore, I used a bit of hammer and 2x4 magic to increase the stock clearance of 45mm (largest practical tire size in mud). Hey, it's an inexpensive frame. My recommendation to you would be to wait for the karate monkey, as it will surely have greater tire clearance, and probably be suspension fork compatable (anyone out there know this for sure?) Wish I had one myself. Here in Central CO high deserts, we can get away with next to nonexistant tire clearance, though, and in the meantime we'll keep havin' fun on our funky machines, and riding everything from fireroads to picnic tables. Notice the riser bars on my bike, which make the thing handle as well as anything I've ridden. By the way, Surly is sold through QBP, and you should be able to get virtually any gearing combination you like when you order a complete bike (crosscheck or karate monkey) through your IBD. |
