| Van Dessel Buzz Bomb bikes for sale | SteamRoller Sep 25, 2002 3:22 AM | | What a coincidence that some people yesterday started talking about the Van Dessel Buzz Bomb 29 inch wheeled bike on the 29 inch wheeled bike forum. I was planning on posting this synopsis today anyways because I have some good news.
My name is Ted and I'm a bicycle enthusiast who has just worked out a special deal with Van Dessel to help closeout the 2002 Buzz Bomb 29 inch wheeled bike. This model is being discontinued for the 2003 model year. It is truly amazing and will make a certain type of cyclist very happy. This bike was designed to be a steamroller on and off road. It is WTB tire ready, but comes stock with Ritchey 40c Alpha Bite Trail Mix tires. The picture posted with this message is from Interbike and shows a rear disc brake model. The bikes available for sale now are equipped with the quick release rear hub and cantilever rear brake (Avid front disc). One of the more unique features is that it has a Rohloff 14 speed internal gear hub. If you've never heard of this before, it truly solves the Achilles heel of most bikes equipped with derailleurs. The Rohloff Speedhub was designed for off road durability and takes the best gears of an equivalent 27 speed drivetrain with no duplication of gears. It is a precision piece of engineering and is made in Germany. It weighs 3.7 pounds, but that is centralized weight, not weight rotating around the circumferance of the wheel. The whole bike (with White Brothers CX-1 fork) only weighs 28 lbs. Even though Rohloff hubs will fit 90% of all bikes out there with no problem, Van Dessel designed special CNC machined drop outs for a perfect fit and a great built-in-frame chain tensioning system. There are no chain tensioner spurs on this bike so you get the look and ease of use of a single speed bike, but with a full gear range.
The current dealer cost on this is $1,000 and the going price at a dealer is $2,000. I am selling these bikes for $1,400 which includes ground (insured) shipping to anywhere within the 48 contiguous US states. The Buzz Bomb originally was $3,000, but two factors made it tougher for successful sales.
Many people have never experienced the awesome, no hassle benefits of a Rohloff gear hub. The reason is all economics. It ranges between $760 to $900 depending on the model. This puts it out of the reach of many consumers and if they can't find one to test ride, many aren't willing to take the chance. All the internals are the same, but one is for horizontal dropouts with axle bolt design, the middle model with quick release but no disc brake hub cap, and the top model with quick release and disc brake hub cap. At any time you can upgrade the hub cap for disc brakes. The The other factor is the combination of Rohloff with a 29 inch wheeled bike. Regular consumers probably didn't know why this combination of 29 inch wheels and a Rohloff hub make it a clear choice in the 29incher arena. I personally ride mine most anywhere. It's awesome on the road with the tires that came with it because you can really haul ass (hence my username Steamroller). But if I see a dirt road, powerline trail, etc., I can attack that terrain and be confident that the Buzz Bomb was designed to do both on and off road quite well.
I am selling Buzz Bombs in frame sizes 50cm 53cm, 56cm, and 59cm. Measurements are done from center of crank to top of seatpost collar. In English units that translates to 15.5", 17.5", 19.5", and 21.5".
If you do choose to order a Buzz Bomb, please contact me via email. My email is: alloy@attbi.com I accept PayPal (www.paypal.com), Cashier's Check, Money order, and personal checks (personal checks need 7-10 days to clear). If you write an email to me, I'll respond with all the pertinent order info: Mailing address for payment, shipping timeline, etc.
With Interbike in just 2 weeks, more people will be finding out about the bike and the awesome deal. Therefore, if you are serious about getting one, don't delay. So, the mainstream market may not have been ready to accept this bike, but to the true cyclist who already knows the benefits of 29 inch wheeled bikes or those who want to get their first 29er, this is the hot ticket. One chainline and no more derailleurs Awareness of product choices and key features is what helps us all to make buying decisions. Don't hesitate to email me with any questions.

| Damn that's tempting... | næstep Sep 25, 2002 6:32 AM | | I'm just trying to justify adding a third bike to my stable. I really don't need another bike! Jeez... (sound of brain in overdrive).

| Wow, that is really almost worth buying and having... | 2melow Sep 25, 2002 7:52 AM | | just for the hub and the fork!
Seriously though, I have been toying with the idea of building a 29"er tandem with the Rohloff Speedhub and s & S couplings so it can be broken down into three parts for travel and quick setup.
Hmmmm....very tempting indeed! |
| Wow, that is really almost worth buying and having... | Cloxxki Sep 25, 2002 9:54 AM | | If you were going to buy the fork or hub in the first place, you can earn almost all your money back by selling the seperate parts as brandnew demo models!
I've heard of even sharper prices for consumers by buying directly from the factory, but I guess you'd have to be all over eBay and able to act quickly.
Very tempting indeed. And I too am trying to justify me buying one. But well, I'm in the process of building 2 hardtial niners now, and before I ever really tested one offrad. The second of them is already kinda extra, and I justify it by calling it the basis for a future Sugar. Lieing to myself really, for I'd never build up a Sugar29 without discbrakes or anything but hi-end parts. The second niner should become a rigid bike, after I figure out a way to go about doing that at a budget, I still refuse to pay 250 for a matching rigid fork. Beachraces, training and 29" promotion are what the second bike (SuperCal) will end up becoming. I could convert it to Singlespeed, but I just justified getting a whole seperate On-One or Surly for that purpose alone. I wacked enough to be open to the benefits of 29", so I might as well give SS a real shot...
Hmmm, if I take out the Rohloff from that Buzzbomb, it could be a SS, WITH a lightweight suspension unit I could borrow for the SuperCal, making the SS a rigid like it should be...
