Wheel Builders - Gravy vs Speed Dream(6 posts)

Wheel Builders - Gravy vs Speed DreamJbW
Sep 26, 2002 3:06 AM
I have spoken to both Steve Gravenites of Gravy Wheels and Dave Thomas of Speed Dream fame. They have each made slightly different recommendations re: CX/Trail riding wheel build. Thomas, appears to be the more techie of the two and is recommending a Velocity Fusion rim, WS Oval spokes mated to a King Classic hub. Gravy suggests the Mavic CXP-33's and has notr made a specific lacing pattern and spoke recommendation, but will do so when and if I order. Any thoughts or opinions on these two Wheel Masters??? I know I can't go wrong with either!!!

Dumb question. 29"er? Please let us know when you order. I have great interest in this subject, I will be building a bike this winter.

You might want to check on the width of the Velocity rim. If you want to run true 29"er tires (Notos, WTB and the kenda) you'll probably want to get something that has a wider width than a road rim IMHO....

I've had 4 sets of wheels built by Dave Thomas and have had no problems at all. But, I'm pretty easy on equipment, so maybe that helps. My last set of 26" wheels was King hubs, Wheelsmith laced 1X and 2X, and Bontrager rims. Less than 1500 grams for both and not a wobble yet!
