| "Adventure Bike" preview | shiggy Sep 26, 2002 8:31 AM | | I am retro fitting my old mtb frame with 700c wheels for long pavement/gravel/trail rides and SuperCommuter duty.
I had a disc tab added to the rear (Wade at Vulture Cycles did a very nice job) and am using the Dimension 26" rigid disc fork (room for a full 29"er tire.) The biggest tire I can run in the rear is about 39-40mm. I have a Michelin Transworld City 700x40 (42mm actual) on the front (this tire is available in sizes from 28mm to 47mm) and on the rear, one of my favorite 700c tires, an old Specialized Tricross II 700x45 (39mm actual).
The BB height is still only 12.75".
I will be running a 2x9 gearing.
More pics as I get it built up. |
| Wierd Parts Bin! | Bigwheel Sep 26, 2002 10:01 AM | | Gotta love it! Interloc post, Benetto frame, disc brakes, sheet hanging off the bars everywhere, a true Metisse---- Hope you like the concept enough to break down for a true 29"er soon. Though a 28"er is a good place to start. Go Shiggy, Go Shiggy, Go Shiggy etc. |
| You have not seen half of the weird parts yet. | shiggy Sep 26, 2002 10:55 AM | | Profile Racing crank. New saddle. Maybe custom full fenders (for SuperCommute duty.) Even more stuff hanging off the bars.
BTW the frame was made in Canada (RM). I bought the "Benetto" decals on a trip to Mexico. Could have bought a set of almost anything from Trek to Cinelli to Buffalo to Campy. 5-10 pesos ($0.70-$1.50.)
I am looking at having Wade (Vulture) building a full 29"er version next spring (with even
i more
surprises.) |
| Blinded by the light! | Bigwheel Sep 26, 2002 4:23 PM | | I guess I didn't pay attention to detail the first time around, you got me with those Benetto stickers! I have a Roberts mtn. bike in the garage, so I thought, hey, anything is possible I guess. I know that is for sure an Interloc post though! I have a full stroker in the rafters here.
I didn't mean to insinuate that this is your first go round with 700c wheels there Shigster, but my forays with 28" wheelsets in the past, though not as glorius as your competitive accomplishments, pale in comparison to what I experienced when I switched to the full meats. No flats, plush ride, great traction and the same speed thrill on the road. I am sure you get what I am talking about-- Sounds like your build will be perfect for what you are wanting though. Can't wait to see what mad science you come up with next spring. |
| Speaking of "blinded..." | shiggy Sep 26, 2002 4:30 PM | | ...the polka dots on the rims are reflective - silver on the front and blue on the rear. |
| I do already love the big wheels | shiggy Sep 26, 2002 11:02 AM | | I spent more than a year riding my Trek 750-framed (the lugged model) cyclocross bike as my mt bike. Used the Tricross II 700x45 and 700x41 tires. Loved every moment of it except the high standover (understandable with the level TT and long seat tube, but great for 'cross racing.
Won a couple of races on that bike and finished 11th at Nats in '91 or '92 (masters.) |
| Whoa Shiggy ... gears?!?! - also a fork question | GlowBoy Sep 26, 2002 11:10 AM | | Does that bike have a 1" or 1 1/8" steer tube? If it's 1", did you have to get the Dimension 'cross disc fork, or do they make the MTB fork in a 1" version?
- Dan |
| Not sure but I think the 26" is made in a 1" | shiggy Sep 26, 2002 11:40 AM | | The 'cross fork is
i shorter
than the 26" and also narrower. A 29'er tire will not fit. |
| I thought Cloxxki got the Moto to fit in the Dim 'cross fork? | GlowBoy Oct 1, 2002 3:58 PM | | And I haven't seen the 26" in a 1" at any web-tailers, so I'm still wondering if it exists. If it doesn't, the 'cross fork would be my only real option if I wanted a disc up front on my old rig.

| I thought Cloxxki got the Moto to fit in the Dim 'cross fork? | Cloxxki Oct 2, 2002 7:33 AM | | I use the mtn. version of Dimension, in 1 1/8", not sure it comes in 1", you could check with QBP, though. The Moto WILL also just fit in a Surly cross fork, which for sure is available in 1". No real mud clearance to spare, but okay for dry-weather rides. I have the 1 1/8" 400mm Surly cross fork in my commuter frankenbike, iwth a fat Schwalbe slick. |
| Matt Chester tried the Surly cross fork | shiggy Oct 2, 2002 8:12 AM | | and did not like the clearance for a 29"er tire.
I agree on checking the QBP catalog for the 1" fork. Ask your LBS to look. Most online retailers are pretty limited on their listings. |
| Horses for courses | shiggy Sep 26, 2002 12:13 PM | | Most of the rides on this bike will have a large portions of paved roads where it is nice to be able to pedal at more than 12mph for 10-20 miles at a time (during a 50-100 mile ride). Still going to be 42/32 x 11-32 gearing with 185mm cranks. |
| re: "Adventure Bike" preview | Cronometro Sep 27, 2002 9:02 AM | | Where can I get some bars like those. I want some cross/mtb bars like those. I just don't care for the Salsa Bell Lap shape. I would like some wide bars that are between standard road bars and Mustache bars. Any suggestions? |
| The WTBs a extra wide and have a 25-degree flare | shiggy Sep 27, 2002 9:54 AM | | They are 24" across the tips.

Short reach, shallow drop, 25.4mm diameter.
Check with webcyclery.com or aebike.com to order |
| Whoa, you have TWO identical Matt Chesters? | Nat Sep 28, 2002 5:38 AM | | Is one a stunt double for the other? A stand-in? A decoy for the papparazzi? |
| I ride them both at the same time | shiggy©® Sep 28, 2002 5:30 PM | | 80) |
| Two? Ha! I got four o' them! | Drevil Oct 1, 2002 11:39 AM | |
...just three more and I'll have one for every day of the week ;^) Of course, mine looks homely next to the Don Sled. |

| Sorry! Didn't see your post, | Black Helicopter Sep 30, 2002 10:54 AM | | Until after I had already posted my reply to the guy's question. Sorry for accidentally being repetitive while trying to help a fella out. I guess I should just stick to lurking. |
| No worries... | shiggy Sep 30, 2002 12:42 PM | | ...I could not resist.
