| 20" and over MTB frames with 26" wheels look stupid | Sevenzero Sep 26, 2002 11:16 AM | | Wheels should be directly related to rider size. I am short and with the proliferation of disc brakes on MTB's I now can build a bike with 24" wheels front and rear to make the bike ride the way I want to, not change my riding style because the bike is too tall for me. I need an extra small frame and the choices are slim in 6" and over travel range. A 6'5'' rider should have the option to build up a bike with 29" wheels. If I was 6'2'' or better I would feel like the jolly green giant humping a smurf on a 24" wheeled bike. I see really tall guys riding MTB's and they look strange with the top tube angled down to the head tube and the head tube a foot tall. |

It all looked much better in proportion, only thing I noticed was the larger cranks, those were stock 44t Deore's or simular, probably 170's.
It does make more sence to make a certain bike model, and have size XS be 24", S an M 26", and L and XL 29".
I'm 6'4" and I look rather silly on my 21" frames and max. extention seatposts. The wheels look tiny.
Please tell us more about the bike you have or plan to build. After all, this forum is not just about being tall, or having hude wheels, but about getting all in ideal proportions to get a good ride out of it for the individual rider. |
