I brought the only hardtail. The others were 3 fs and one softtail. I'm of the opinion that a 26" fs is faster down bumpy terrain than any hardtail ridden with average skills such as mine, but I was never far behind. I think the big wheels excel at rolling over moderate sized objects like in the action shot.
Yabbut, what about the Speedhub??AK Ken

What kind of frame/dropouts do you have? How do you tension the chain?

We have a Speedhub on a BurroBike with vertical dropouts, so we have a derailleur style tensioner with enough slack to allow running a double chain ring for 28 gear choices.

The frame is made by Van Dessel. The model is the Buzz Bomb.
According to Van Dessel elsewhere on this forum the model is to be
discontinued for 2003. The dropouts are Rohloff designed.

Left dropout w/ disc mount:

Right dropout:

But I'm guessing that's not really the view you were looking for so here's a pic:

My bike is currently stock thus has a rear v-brake rather than a disc
like in the pic. It's a little hard to tell from the pic and diagrams
but the dropouts are bolted to the frame and slide forward and back to
tension the chain.

I wondered if you were a BuzzBomber. Pretty tempting bike for great prices right now. I came pretty close to ordering one but have tentatively decided to put that money toward a full suspension ride with big wheels.

Thanks for the response.

Who do you know that's more open minded and adaptable than me? Rohloff hubs, skis on the front tire, BMX bars, BurroBike...I'm a cutting edge kinda guy as well as a fashion trendsetter!

I'm currently torn, though, as I have another interest that may or may not accept 29 inch wheels. It's called a Nucleon Freeride, made by Nikolai, and it has a speedhub mounted amidships and the rear suspension pivots around THAT.

That really cleans up the ground clearance/derailleur ripping off/dirty dangling drivetrain issues that we deal with here. If nothing else, I may be able to put a 29 inch frontend on it.

As yet I've not purchased the bike, but hope to demo one when I'm in America next month and ride to decide. My only 29inch essperience so far was on a MtTam around the parking lot, but MAN! It really rolled over those thick paint stripes and stuff GREAT! Love the larger contact patch, too!
