On which terrain do 44mm Mutano's out-perform Nano's?Cloxxki

I just got a pair of Mutano's along with the Frame/fork/wheels deal from NeedySpeedy. Will I even be using the Mutano's? I hear so many good things about the Nano's...
Just before bed I hit the sand trap behing my house, construction going on there. Absurd how far I came, riding my Eggbeaters with slick leather shoes in pitch-dark, at low effort.

So where do Mutano's shine where Nano's leave somehting to wish for? Yes, the Mutano's are about 100g each lighter, 620g over 720g, according to the bunch I just got in.

Thanks!

Hey Cloxxki,

Looks like you built the bike up pretty light for now - How much does it weigh? When I seen the pics I felt alittle upset that i sold it!! Hopefully, I'll get another one. For now until my finances get better I've got to play around on my 26".

I mounted up the Mutanos and took a quick trip up & down the block. The Mutanos do accelerate faster, it definently feels quicker. I would say for road training rides they would be great and for extremely smooth, fast hardpack courses (if any extist in your area).

Good Luck with the bike! Take care of her! And thanks again!

Scott

I have to put it on the scales sometimes, but indeed it can be much ligher and still be safe.

Right now I've mounted a 20W+5W lightset on it, plus a super-bright 3-LED Cateye thingy. Toningt will be a first of many :
- First true niner niner ride
- And my first nightride with decent lights
- ...and I'll try offroad nightriding for the first time.
Should be an experience alright!

Just calculated the bike weight, in an Excel sheet. As I know all individual weigths quite precise, I'm pretty sure it's about 11,000-11,100g, or some 24,35lb.
This is with stock 190g WTB tubes, the heaviest Nano's I've weighed so far, XT skewers, stock SRAM grips, Eggbeaters, etc. That's already worth close to a pound. Wait till my custom Ridley is finished, using some of the parts from this bike. Sub 10,000 is my goal, while still strong enough for a guy my size!
This week i'm running a Nano Front / Mutano Rear aired up2melow

at about 55 psi rear, 45 front. I'm hitting mostly cyclocross type trails though with some rocks. This setup really flies, especially if and when I encounter small patches of rocks. With the big air volume fattie up front, you don't have to worry about picking a perfect line - but I did when I had a Mutano up front.

I don't trust the Mutano as a XC tire out here, too many rocks in the backcountry and it is simply too skinny. I haven't flatted it yet, but it has been mainly on groomers and fireroads.

Pretty much like riding a road bike to the trails also.
