| Help me chose correct rims and tires | NEKdvm Oct 11, 2002 8:37 AM | | I need to build a pair of wheels around some single speed hubs. These wheels will be used for cyclocross this winter and for (probably) a Surly Karate Monkey SS mountain bike next summer. The tires will be used on a BuzzBomb in the meantime.
What do people think about the 24mm Velocity Dyad rim vs the 21mm WTB Speedmaster 11.3? Any better rim choices?
As for mt bike tires for all around conditions, I was thinking WTB Motoraptor? Any better all-around 2.1 tires?
Any feedback would help, esp from you experienced guys.
PS I would like to build these soon, so I can't wait for new offerings, just current stuff. |
| Sure hard to beat Mavic quality | 2melow Oct 11, 2002 9:26 AM | | I'd go for a Mavic T519 or T520 for your application. If you want that wide of a rim, might as well use a super bomber Mavic touring rim.
I kinda went overkill and built up King/T520/36spke w/ brass nipples. I've trued the rear once in a year, the front I still haven't touched.
Look closely at the orange dot on my front tire. Right below that, the rim has taken a hit. It is still as true as the day it was built. That says a lot.
Also, goatheads still penetrate a 29"er. How I picked this up on my way to work on a paved bike path, I have no idea. That is another story. Gotta pump it up and pedal my ass off back home I guess...
As for tires, my favorite is still the Nanoraptor. When the snow starts sticking here in Colorado, i'll put the Moto's back on. The dig deeper. |
| here's a start | banks Oct 12, 2002 3:27 PM | | I have been rolling 32 hole Dyads for over a year now and no truing needed! 200lbs on a rigid Rock Lobster. The are a bit smaller in overall diameter, so carefull when pumping the tire up, but once seated correctly they have not popped off under 25psi. I like the Ceramic on the Mavics, but go WIDE. Velocity will have black Dyads in a week or so.
WTB rims, on the other hand, have many problems with Blowing off tires, correctly seated while riding around 35-45psi. Not good
Mud tends to head off faster on the IRC Notos, with a folding bead, than the Motoraptors. Motos have a square knob profile and hook up here-loose crap over hardpack. Notos tend to make the Lobster into the drifing machine!! Very controled and fast roling on hard pack, though not much for braking traction when rotating in rear direction.
If any local rider here in my area wants to loose skin-has happened already, ride the Nano. |
| Not the lightest option | Stonedead Oct 13, 2002 4:53 PM | | Check out the trekking rims by Alex. I've got a set of DM18 that i'vee been running since june and have no need to true. they're nice and wide and are cheap and strong (but not that light). A good cheaper option (wanted salsa or mavic, but I'm in grad school and low on cash). www.alexrims.com |
