first time atlantis offroad jaunt! (kinda long)sslos

hey everyone! i finally got a chance to ride the atlantis off road on saturday afternoon- worked too late on friday, and had to come in on saturday, too : (
anyway, i took it out to a local park in san diego, just because it was convenient, and i know the trails pretty well by now. the first thing that struck me was just how smoothly these big wheels roll over stuff! the second thing i noticed is that after three years of not using multiple gears off road, you tend to ride things in a larger gear than you need to.
all in all, i'd say that i'm sold on the big wheels! i just need to adjust to shifting again, and i definitely want to take it out on a longer, more challenging ride.
anyone have any thoughts on going single w/ a 29"er?

Glad you were quick to see the light Los. This statement: "you tend to ride things in a larger gear than you need to", while a bit vague, is the same thing I experienced 4 years ago on my first ride. I don't think that you are necessarily riding in a larger gear than you need to, but in fact in a larger gear than you are used to riding? Though because you have been S Speeding for quite awhile on that terrain it would be hard to judge for sure? I noticed I was climbing in the middle ring more myself on formerly granny ring climbs on my 26"er.

Everyone I know that has SS 29"ers loves them. Because a 2:1 ratio will be higher with the bigger wheel I think most are running a 32/18 or 20 to compensate. It all depends on the amount of up versus down anyways. The Schlumpf Speed Drive that I have mentioned here before works really well as it gives you two gear options with a single chain line and no tension requirements. I think they work really well because you get a good gear for ups and a higher gear for across and down. They are bombproof and easy to use.

I would for sure consider a taller BB on a SS now after having ridden my converted bike alot. The feature of more pedal clearance would be key on a SS bike and I don't notice any effect in balance or stability. I do notice that I haven't hit a pedal yet! Though mine is 13.5" I think that 12.5 or .75 would work good also.

SS 29er: I've been riding a ss 29er since Jan 02, and I love it. I'm using a 34 X 20/180mm for rocky, hilly riding here in GJ CO. I had to gear it down from my previous gearing that I had on my 26". I agree on the BB ht, that you can get away with it being higher without the negative effects that you would get on a 26". Mine is 12" high, and in hind sight I would have choosen 13". I have also found that I can run my bars higher in relation to my seat without front end wheel wash, vs what bar ht I run on my 26". Has anyone else found this to be so?
