Anyone have any experience with Shimano M-515 mechanical disk brakes. I know Avids are better but I can get these real cheap. The reviews in the other section of MTBR are pretty good but I trust this group more than the average MTBR.

Work very well, but pretty heavy--510gm for M515 vs. 305gm for Avid per wheel.

I also hear good things about the latest Formula Activa mechanicals. Lighter than the Avids, and way cheaper. I've seen those for really cheap as well.
If you didn't alreay, do realize that a 29" wheel, with the same discbrake, will require a ~10% larger rotor to develope the same amount of power as on a 26" bike. I really noticed this difference, changing the front Deore braked spare bike into a 26"/29" Frankenbike. Real power loss, and very significant. I'll have to look for an affordable adapter and larger rotor, as the Deore brake is good, but never was the strongest out there. Hmm,never really cleaned the rotor either, think I should do that first.
