146 on a 29 in the 90'sMikec

Tomorrow night starts the 146-mile Kokopelli Trail Race. Attached are a few photos and some minutia about the bike I'll be racing.

The trail isn't crazy technical, but it has it's share of surprises mixed into a bunch of doubletrack, singletrack, and gravel road. Very rocky, in some places very steep, dusty, and the prediction is for weather in the 90's, so it's gonna be a cooker. Typically the way to do well in this event is to stay hydrated. More on that later...

I'm racing an Airborne B-29 set up with a SRAM grouppo (everything but the front der), Hayes Hydraulics, Hugi 240 hubs laced with DT spokes to Zipp 404 rims, shod with Kenda Klaws. I haven't had great luck with NoTubes in these rims, so I'll be running them with Kenda tubes at 35-38psi.

The fork is a Marz MX Comp, with dual coils and a whopping 1 (yes, one) psi in each leg...

FSA Team Cranks with 22/32/44, and Eggs round out the package.

Post is a Moxey. Anyone that's spent any time on one of these knows why.

Front view shows the two LED lights I'll be depending on (we start at 3am from Slickrock, in order to beat some of the heat and hopefully finish by sunset), as well as the map holder and handlebar configuration. It's an old 605mm Zoom Brahma Bar (go ahead and laugh, all my friends do) that's the most comfortable thing on earth for long days in the saddle. White bar tape is an eyesore, but it's much cooler than black this time of year.

Hubs are Hugi 240's, 32 hole, laced 2x with DT supercomp spokes and prolock nipples to some Zipp 404's. They're light, extremely stiff(they've redefined 'on rails' for me) and very difficult to knock out of true. Kenda Klaw XT 2.1's (I use the front tread on both ends of the bike) roll faster than anything but the Nano, while still hooking up very well in corners and being a lot more durable in the sidewall than the Nanos ever could be.

Brakes are Hayes Mag Plus. Very light, very sweet feel at the lever, with more modulation than the older versions that I love so much.

Cranks are 170's, and while I'd prefer 20/30/42, it was hard to argue with the price.

There are only two reliable water sources on the whole trail (it's a self-supported race), so I'll carry three large bottles on the bike, plus a 10 liter bladder in my pack.

Holy Crap Mike! I have hauled 6L at one time and it was a challenge to find a bag. What system are you using?
Is that Last year's MX fork?Stonedead

If so, How did you adapt the coil springs? I've been wanting to do that to my MX on my 2002 Tam.

SRAM rear der, chain and cassette will take care of shifting duties nicely, again with Hayes, Hugi, DT, Kenda, and Zipp.

I completed this race last year in 19 hours, but had wicked headwinds and lots of unrideable sand. I'm hoping for slightly better conditions tomorrow, and I'd love to turn in a sub 18 hour time. There are 10 racers confirmed, and I'd guess the winner will roll into the Loma trailhead right at 17 hours.

I'll post an update in a few days.

Keep up posted with the results. I assume the digital camera will add too much weight for race pics...

Hope it isn't too hot for ya.
