| Looking at a 29 incher..... need opinions.. | SweetRDR May 25, 2003 6:07 AM | | I currently have a Gary Fisher Sugar 3 - and I simply *LOVE* this bike.
Yet I am looking at a 29 incher since - well you know.
fisher has the 292 and 293 - .... opinions?
Also, what tires are available.
this is the start of the questions, more to come I'm sure.

| Here's one | Bigwheel May 25, 2003 7:27 AM | | Go down to your Fisher dealer and try out one of those 292 or 3's. Hopefully you don't need an XL as I don't think they are going to make them available this year for some reason.
Don't worry about the tire thing too much. The stock tires will be sufficient for your needs to see how the 29 stacks up to your *LOVE*. See if you can't ride on your favorite trail enough to get a feel for any differences between the two and report back here.
Over and out. |
| 292 xl | escamillo May 25, 2003 8:11 AM | | I just recieved my 292 XL, actualy its being built at the my local shop as I write this. I ordered one a few months ago and finaly emailed Gary Fisher out of frustration and impatience. Matt the rep emailed back and asked which shop I ordered it from and next thing you know GF had it shiped out that day.
I spent about 4 hours in the saddle on the 292 at two different demo days and love it. I am now selliing off all of my 26 inch bikes.
sweetRDR, find one of the GF demo days and throw a leg over a 292 or 293, you'll love the ride.

| re: Looking at a 29 incher..... need opinions.. | C-Hog May 26, 2003 6:44 AM | | I think the first question you need to ask yourself is "what are your going to use the bike for?" What I mean by that is; Are you going to trail ride? Compete in sub-2 hour races? Compete in marathon races? Other?
I rode a Sugar1 for the past three years, and like you, absolutely loved the ride. I then demo'd a Sugar292 last November, and immediately fell in love. I placed my order for a 292 the very next day. In March, two weeks before my racing season was to begin, I got tired of waiting for the 292, and changed my order to a Fisher hardtail. Built the bike up with some high-end parts and a Thudbuster suspension seatpost.
In XC races lasting up to 2 hours, I don't miss my full-suspension the least bit, even when the course is very rocky/technical. The larger wheels, along with the Thudbuster, are more than adequate to protect my 45 year-old back. I also do a lot of training on fire road-type routes, and comfortably complete 4-6 hour long rides.
If I were competing in marathon-length events on rocky single-track however, I'm sure I would want the 292. I haven't forgotten how incredibly impressed I was with that bike back in November.
I hope that helps. I know I haven't actually answered your question. I think you are the only one who can do that for you. Test ride the bikes as much as possible, and gather as much info from this site as you can. Either way you go, you'll be happy with the 29er ride. Good luck. |
