pedals(8 posts)

Apparantly my XL GF 29er is finally on its way. I have been able to pick and choose almost all my components instead of going with a stock configuration--and I think that the last thing that I need to pick are pedals.

There are so many and largely, I have just always used clips and straps. I just put a cheap set of spd's from a friend on to get used to them and mostly have hated them.

I am already largely overbudget on the whole project, but I want the bike to be exactly what I want. I am pretty excited about the eggbeaters, especially the Look version, but am concerned about durability(not that I am that hard on them, but that I am like 245#)

I have gotten a fair amount of opinions--and am looking for more--any thoughts?

I don't claim to be an "expert" or anything, but I have used SPD's, Onza's, Times, and Eggbeaters, and like my Eggbeaters the best. The action to click in and out is virtually identical to the Times, but the Eggbeaters are way lighter. That's just my 2 cents worth. Please post a picture of your bike, once you have it completed.

I`ve been on them for 7? years now and love them.Just picked up some new Z`s and really like the large platform.0 problems with release, entry, mud or sevicability. If you go with the aliums a price well under $100 is easy.

In doing my pedal research, I have tried to get a hold of people at Crnkbros & Look. I am pretty concerned about breaking some of this stuff with my weight (245#) and I thought some of the other clydesdales might be interested in this note I got back from CrankBros

Chris,
Only the triple ti-s have a weight limit, because of
the ti spindle. At
250lbs, you will put a great deal of stress on all of
your light weight
cycling components. Please keep in mind, anything can
break. I have talked
to a number of consumers weighing well over 250lbs,
without any reported
problems. I hop this answers your questions. Thanks

I have Time Atacs on my XL Mt Tam and have used them on my 26 for quite a while. I like them so well I got each of my sons a set so we could trade rides occassionally (Like I'm actually going to ride their 26"ers while they ride mine, LOL!) I've zero problems with them. I weigh around 220 and these are solid. WWs may go for the Eggbeaters and I'm sure they're good, but I'll stick with what's working for me.

I'm getting used to my Thudbuster seatpost and getting the seat position dialed in and I'm really happy with it. I was worried I wouldn't be able use a seat bag for tube & tools but my Pedro fit's fine and doesn't interfere with the post. I also love my Cane Creek Ergo bar ends, they're great for cruising on straights and for climbing. You can tell I'm not concerned about weight, I want a comfy efficient ride.

What ever you do with your GF, make it yours, you're the one that will be riding it.
Go with Times (I've used both)...ss jimbo

and the Times are waaaaaaaaay better than Eggbeaters. I rode the Eggbeaters for three months and the bearings and cleats were both trashed. There was alot of play between the cleat and the pedal which was really annoying. The bearings had tons of play. They are not nearly as easy to get into. Also I ride my Times all over town in sneakers, up and down curbs, steps, etc, but the Eggbeaters are pretty much impossible to do that with.

I switched from ATACs and never looked back. These are lighter than Egg Beaters, which I haven't tried, but heard mostly good things about. If you have knee issues, the Frogs can't be beat. They are also the easist pedals to get out of when crossing technical sections. Other than the spindle, no moving parts to catch or break. Not good in sticky mud, though.
