| Optimal Stem Length for XL Fishers??? | C-Hog May 27, 2003 2:33 PM | | Several of you have commented in some of the posts below about stem length choices for Fisher XL frames. While 110mm stems are spec'd on the XL frames, some of you have evidently chosen to run 90mm stems. I currently have a 110mm stem on my XL X-Caliber, but have been kicking around the idea of trying a 90mm stem. I would like to hear more detailed comments from those of you who have tried both stem lengths (and any others out there who care to comment) about the pro's and con's of the "shorter" and "longer" stems. (Probably my biggest concern with the 90mm stem is will the front end want to lift on really steep climbs?) Thanks in advance for the advice. |

| re: Optimal Stem Length for XL Fishers??? | Cloxxki May 28, 2003 6:08 AM | | I'm 6'4" with very short torso but ape-like arms. I have a -17º 90mm on my XL, so a bit like a regular 100mm. Bike fits me like a glove this way.
Gary, didn't you ride an L before? And, any chance for a beefed up XXL some day? Up till my arm-pits-style 39.2" inseam the XL is big enough, but for really grown men it could be a bit low.
I had a 6'8" giant try my bike once with a 120mm, which was just right for him, just a tad on the low side. |

| Hum, what about Larges? | AZ2NC May 28, 2003 8:52 PM | | So if 90mm is optimal for the XLs, what about on a regular old Large? I've got a 02 Tam in the large flavor that's spec'd with a 105mm stem, but if 90 is optimal on an XL, might a large need something even shorter?
The 105mm does seem a little long to me and I'd been playing with the idea of trying something a bit shorter (and maybe flatter than the stock 7 degrees). Have other Large riders tried this, and to what ends? Also, if shorter is optimal, why are longer stems stock?
Thanks in advance. |
| Hum, what about Larges? | Gary Fisher May 29, 2003 5:24 AM | | 90mm is not much shorter. Pay attention to angle of rise, a riser stem can be much shorter in reach. Look at where the grips wind up, a 7 degree handlebar's grip, compared to a 3 degree bar's is like having a 15 mm shorter stem.
Have you fliped the stem?
At the time we speced the stems there were very few short ones. The guys in the home office didn't want to bikes to look "weird" either. Now the stems we use look very normal.
We make and stock every size Bonty stem, including the diffrent angle rises. |
| Hum, what about Larges? | AZ2NC May 29, 2003 8:28 PM | | Thanks for the info. I do like the 7 degree sweep bar as that has a more riser-like hand position while still allowing a low front end, but rather than flip the stem I currently have all the spacers on top of the stem. (I'm still toying with things and don't want to prematurely cut the steering tube.) Still, I like the idea of the cockpit being just a hair tighter (at 6' on a large I feel I'm about as short as this size will take) and might try a 90mm stem if others have had good luck with it.
Of course, all of this probably has just as much to do with wanting to make my Fisher MY FISHER, like the guy said in one of the posts below. That, and vanity.
Thanks for the help. |
| I swapped | Stonedead May 30, 2003 7:42 AM | | I swapped my stock 110mm stem for a 90mm on my Large and liked it. Granted it was only a spin around the block. I haven't been able to get a good ride in lately, as I'm recovering from hip surgery, but I really like it over the stock stem. I'm about 6',as well. |
