Kona Jake convert?veelz

Has anyone tried to convert a production cross bike into a 29"er? I was wondering what your impressions would be. What would the largest tire that I could fit in there? thanks for any help,

Scott

I went as far as I could with my Fuji Cross, need more room in the chainstays. I should have a Surly KM next week.

I managed to fit mutanoraptors on to a bonty cx.At 44/44 I had to beat up the chainstays a bit and snip the side lugs on the back, but it works. It completly changed the way the bike rides. When I`m not riding ss or fixed,it`s the bike I ride.

I have a Kona Major Snake and I've put some effort into making it as off-road worthy as I can. Ritchey ZED 700C's (42mm)are the largest tire I've been able to fit on the bike - maybe something like the 44mm Mutanoraptors will fit as well - you'll probably take the paint off of the chain-stays and have some problems squeezing them past the canti-brakes (if you're still running them).

One thing to think about - the rear triangle is built around a road sized hub and the whole drive chain issue - not to mention that the frame (at least not to my knowledge)is corrected for a suspension fork.

Kona CX bikes tend have a narrower range of gears than mtn bikes. If you're wanting to go all out with the conversion - it could mean a whole new drive train - triple crank, bottom bracket, chain, shifters, front and rear derailluers, cables and cassette.

I think of the Jake as an extremely versatile bike - but I don't think it can convert all the way to a full on mtn bike. I enjoy doing 3 and 4 hour rides with a healthy mix of concrete, double track and single track on the Jake. It will beat you up on rocky terrain tho - that cro-moly fork and (nice stiff) alu frame can only absorb so much.

Thats my $ .02 at any rate.
thanks for the info guysveelz

thanks for the help. I think I'll leave it more as a cross bike, but I may put some of those tire suggestions to use, I want to take the thing for a road/fire road/singletrack jaunt in a week or two.
