| re: when will Gary spec discs?! | jpre Jun 2, 2003 12:38 PM | | While I personally think discs are great, 29" wheels are probably the best wheel size to match to v's currently in mass production. |

| I like the disk-ready hub idea | MacFarley Jun 3, 2003 10:20 AM | | As the owner of a 2003 GF 29"er, and as a part-time employee of a GF dealer, I really like the fact that the bikes are spec-ed with disc ready hubs. It keeps the intial cost down for customers who wouldn't want disks, but keeps the conversion cost down for those who do since you don't have to buy new wheels in the process. |

| Thinking you are the real GF | s peak Jun 3, 2003 6:58 PM | | From the Airione seat on that bike and knowing how rare they are ('cause I have one too - Thanks Suzette), I'm thinking you are the real GF. AZ and Cal dealers are coming around to discs. Just do it. |
| Thinking you are the real GF | n8ofire Jun 4, 2003 4:40 AM | | This IS GF's bike (btw, it looked unpainted to me)- he was riding it on Sunday. Great guy, signed my SC frame as well. Thanks Gary, and thanks for participating on the board! BTW, I LOVE my avid ultmates. As a racer I think the SC needs to be lighter, so the disc hubs had to go on my bike. WB fork helps a lot also. I sell these bikes, and Weight is often an objection to buying. Not saying I don't like discs, but for the top "racing" model, I don't think you need it with the performance of the avids. Just my .02c.
So, how about working on the UCI? |
| Thinking you are the real GF | Spokejunky Jun 7, 2003 6:46 PM | | I've been racing on the '03 Supercal for this season. I've been running the Hope Mini disc before the Magura super light carbon came out. I've ridden both the Stan's aluminum and stock stainless discs. The Stan's are a DRY condition disc without a doubt. I ran a muddy race once this year and totally stripped out the pads and the disc covering in one mud race due to mud friction between the rotors and pads. I'm not sold on the '03 XTR stuff as it limits you to your drivetrain/braking options. I've seen folks mix Shimano/SRAM and disc on bikes so modular is the way to go. Before I rode the Hope setup I used to ride with the Hayes setup on a '01 Excaliber. The Hope setup is nice and smooth with no adverse heat buildup that the Hayes tended to have after negotiating down long switchbacks and braking. |
