| Karate Monkey-hub set up & disc brakes? | SFrider Jun 3, 2003 12:12 PM | | am building up a Surly Karate Monkey as a cross bike and I want the option of using it as a singlespeed cross bike as well as a touring/road bike with gears. I will also be running disc brakes. So I need a hub that can be converted (relatively easily) from a ss and a cassette set-up. I don't want to spend a ton of $$ either. Is my only option to use a regular cassette hub and just use a bunch of spacers for the ss setup? IS there a better option for what I want?
Also, what are the best (inexpensive) disc brakes to use with a drop bar & road levers? I know Avid makes a road version, right? Can I use any disc brake? What do I need to know about compatibility? Thanks |
| A couple thoughts | MTJ Jun 4, 2003 3:57 AM | | First note - I would post this on the cyclocross forum at Roadbikereview.com. Those guys are as good as the ones here on the 29 inch forum and they will probably have more info.
So far everything I've found is Avid is the only disc manufacturer comatible with road levers. If you aren't using STI levers, you could also use the DiaCompe 287V levers which would allow you to run Shimano or Hayes mechanical brakes also (but like I said that's only an option if you were going to use barcon or downtube shifters).
As far as the hub goes, while there may be some sort of convertible hub - though I have yet to see one - I think that the spacer plan is not only the easiest but certainly the most cost-effective as well. If you want to spend money later, you can always build a rear wheel with a single speed hub. |
| Thanks for the advice. | SFrider Jun 4, 2003 4:12 PM | | So, the Avid disc brakes (road version) are compatible with brake levers with STI shifting, right? I may go with the bar-end shifters since I think they are a lot cheaper than even the lowest Shimano STI levers. |

I have a set I'm not using and they are awesome brakes.

| go bar-ends!!! | sslos Jun 5, 2003 7:47 AM | | after several years of 'cross racing, i believe that simpler is better.
the two big reasons to not use sti are crash related; one, bar-ends are much cheaper to replace after particularly ugly crashes, and two,
i if
you tweak your derailleur hanger, you have a friction shifting option with bar-snds.
here's a caveat about my opinion- about three years ago, i opted to forego the derailleurs on my 'cross bikes, as well as my moutain bikes.
my karate monkey will be built single, multipurpose.
good luck, and have fun with your project!

I run mine with an XT disc hub. |
