I don't think we've done a rim list yet, though I've wanted to. The concept is kind of vague since any 700c rim can technically be a 29"er rim. How about this. Everyone post the rims you're actually using a 29" tire on that isn't in the thread yet.

Alex TD17 (disc only)
Alex G3000 (Van Dessel Extra Extra)
Bontrager Fairlane
Bontrager Mustang
Bontrager Racelite
Mavic T519/T520 (strong touring rim *a 29"er board favorite*)
Mavic Open Pro (lightweight road rim)
Mavic T223/T224
Mavic MA series (MA2,MA3,MA40) (road rims)
Mavic Speedcities
Ritchey OCR Rock Pro
Ritchey OCR Trekking (same as Rock Pro?)
Ritchey Girder XC Pro
Salsa Delgado (cyclocross rim)
Sun 0 Degree XC
Sun Rhyno Lite (limited availability)
Velocity Dyad
Velocity Razor

Anyone feel free to make corrections to this list since I just threw it together without much actual research.

Minor correction to the rim list- the 700c version of the Sun 0 Degree XC is called the 0 Degree XTC.

I am using mavic 224's, there cheap, there strong, unfortunatly there not exactly the lightest not that heavy either, I've hit some pretty cool single track with them, and there as true as the day I got them. I do think any 700c rim will work to a degree if there built correctly!!!!!! in the first place.

I am building a Karate Monkey as a cross bike that I will use on trails as well as on the road. I was looking at the Salsa DelGado Cross rim and the Mavic T52). I want something that is pretty durable and light. I want the ability to switch this over to a 29" mtb with the same wheels.. Does anyone have any opinions on the 2 rims mentioned or recommendations? Thanks

I have two wheel sets that I use on my cyclo-cross bike. The first consists of Alex TD17 rims laced to American Classic Disc MTB hubs. This combination is light, but doesn't seem to stay true when being used on the serious single track.(please note that I weigh >200lbs) I now use this set with road tires for road riding on my cross rig.

The second set is overbuilt and really beefy. It has T520 rims laced to CK disc-go-tech hubs. This set has been abused on some gnarly single track are as true today as they were new. The only adjustment I have had to make is to the bearing endplay on the rear hub...no biggie. When the wheels were first built they were totally silent. but now that they have been broken in they sound like Kings!!

For a photo of my ride with the AmClassic/Alex wheels click the link below.

The short reply is that both are great rims...you just need to decide how beefy the wheels need to be to serve your purpose.

hope this helps!

Thanks for the advice. How do you like your American Classic disc hubs? I am looking for an affordable set of mtb disc hubs for my bike. So far, I have only considered Shimano XT disc hubs because they are affordable. Any other suggestions? Don't want them to be too heavy.

Great bike, by the way. I have a Strong singlespeed mtb and love it. You've set up your cross bike pretty much like I am going to build mine (except I will have a cheap-ass frame). If you don't mind, I'd love to hear the component set up and what you like and dislike about it. I am still uncertain on which disc brakes (probably Avids), shifters, and levers (might go bar-ends to save $$)

I really like the American Classic hubs. They are fairly light and are smooth like buttah. However, when I built up the second wheel set I went with the Chris King hubs because they not only have the instant engagement in the rear, but they are much more robust. For my size and whatnot I would probably not put AC on my MTB. I have an XT/Mavic disc wheelset for when I get around to putting discs on my MTB. If I had the money I would go with CKs as I love them on my cross rig.

I am glad you like your Strong SS. Living here in Bozeman and knowing the gang at Strong it is great to hear from other satisfied customers. I have made a few changes since the photo I posted a link to so here is the list of what is on my cross bike right now:

Strong Overlander Disc (w/custom powdercoat: Pondscum to Tucker Orange fade)
Salsa Bell Lap bars, flip-off seat clamp, and flip-off skewers
CK nothreadset (MANGO)
Thomson Post and Stem
Full Ultegra drivetrain w/ XT 11-34 cassette and flightdeck computer
Avid road disc brakes
Wheels: MavicT520 rims (w/orange powdercoat), DT Alpine III spokes, CK disc-go-tech hubs (MANGO)
WTB Mutano Raptor tires 44/44 700C
Selle Italia MAX Flite TransAm
I have a set of Paul cross levers which will go on soon too!

Not that I am obsessed with it though ;)

I have not one complaint with this setup. The only change I am temped by is to get the Pace carbon fork. That looks too sweet and would reduce the vibrations over really chatty sections, but with a baby on the way that will have to wait a while. This bike is by no means a light bike, but it is stout enough for me to use on almost any single track I have run across. As I mentioned earlier I also use this as my road bike too by changing out the wheelset.

Barcon shifters are a really classic way to go. I have a friend who has set up his Strong cross bike with them and it is pretty sweet.

Have fun building it up and post some porn of it when you get it done!

take care,
THE BUG

SFrider-
My new wheels with Salso Delgados will hopefully arrive tomorrow. I have no experience with these rims but made the choice based upon posts I've read on this forum over the months. Compared to the T52, the Salsa is a little lighter, is sleeved instead of welded, and is cheaper. Owners (or guys who know owners) of this rim who have posted here have spoken highly of them. The T52 is nearly an object of cult worship on this forum. It is praised for its strength and reliability. It has a welded join and sidewall wear indicators. It also costs more. I went with the Delgado because I'm not too hard on equipment and wanted to save a few grams and a few bucks. By the way, as I posted earlier, Universal Cycles built me a Delgado/XTR wheelset for $260 (non-disc).

Thanks, I am leaning toward the Salsa Delgados, might consider the Alex TD17 rims too.
