Anyone weigh their Monkey?(8 posts)

Anyone weigh their Monkey?Rossman
Jun 8, 2003 3:30 PM
Hi. Building up or buying a bike or frame for my wife and i'm seriously considering the KM. I have a Vicious 29er that she said feels OK, but for the amount of riding and type of riding she does, the KM is more in our budget for her toy.

She is sensitive to the bike weight issue. If i build a KM up with Shimano XT-ish stuff and some MA3 rims (or something like them) what'll that set me at (APPROXIMATELY!!!) weightwise?

THANKS,
ross

You might try going to speedgoat.com and building up a KM w/ their bike configurator. It tells you the weight with each added component.

I am running drop bars, 1x9, salsa delgado rims and xt hubs, moto raptor tires, suspension post 27 lbs. Using road rims and cross tires would lower the weight, but sacrifice the plush ride.

Weight is just over 24 lbs on my digital fish scale. Might not be much help, since it's a singlespeed and it sounds like you're going geared. However, I can say that the frame with uncut fork and seatpost Constrictor weighed in at 7.8 lbs on same scale.

*18" frame with rigid fork
*Salsa Delgada X rims, 32 hole, DT Swiss comp spokes (double butted)
*Kenda Klaw XT tires
*Avid mech disc brakes: 165 mm rotor (old style) up front, 160 mm rotor in back
*Avid SD-7 levers
*Paul WORD disc hub (light!) in back, Hope XC disc hub up front
*RaceFace Tubine LP cranks (splined)
*RaceFace Evolve XC bottom bracket
*Cook Bros eggbeaters pedals
*Salsa 32 T chainring
*AC claws 18 T freewheel
*Thomson seatpost
*RaceFace Deus stem
*Azonic World Force 28"x2" riser
*King headset
*Selle San Marco Arami saddle
*Oury grips
*SRAM PC-48 chain

sounds like a nice bike...still getting ideas on building up mine. Do you know how much the KM fork weighs? Any idea if a Pace carbon fork is the right length for a Karate Monkey? Thanks

The Pace will be on the short side, some 38mm shorter. KM fork was about 1120g cut to my required length and without canti bosses, I seem to recall. Not bad at all.
KM fork (uncut) = 2.4 lbs on my scale...eelpie

Sorry, but the pic is pretty crappy. Got a new camera, so there'll be some nice ones sometime soon. These were the original components, but I've since swapped to the RF stem (shorter, lower rise).

No idea about the Pace, sorry.

18" Surly KM frame and KM rigid fork
King headset
Velocity Dyad 36 hole rims (480 grams each)
XT (this years) silver non-disk hubs
WS 14DB spokes, 2X front, 3X/radial rear
XTR cassette (steel) 12-32 (8 speed)
WTB motoraptor 2.1 tires
Velox Rim strips
Easton EA50 (last years) 110 deg, 0 deg.
Titec Hellbent Flat tracker bar (had to go 0 deg / flat bar to get the bars low enough with the tall front end and low bottom bracket)
Syncros silver post 410mm cut to fit
Shimano ES 71 (this years) BB 73mm x118mm
XT M752 (last years) crank & rings 44/32/22
SRAM PC59 chain
Time ATAC alums
XT rear derailleur
LX high clamp front derailleur
DX 7 speed thumbshifters (circa 1990 with the extra 8th click)
TFI Ti Race Liberator saddle
XT V-brakes and levers
Shimano wire cables and housings
Ritchey grips

Total weight is around 27-28 pounds if I remember correctly.

I've made a few changes since I first put it together. I plan on getting a set of semi slick cyclocross tires for it and throwing on an 11/28 cassette for my road rides. The Motoraptors work OK in the dirt but don't roll very fast on the pavement and take a considerable amount of ummph to get moving.
