Bonty Race Vs. Salsa/XTR wheels - A Review(2 posts)

Bonty Race Vs. Salsa/XTR wheels - A ReviewAppendage

Well, not really a review. More like my experience.

On Cloxkki's old 29er forum, several complaints were posted about the Bontrager Race wheelset being flexy. Some blamed it on the rims, some blamed it on the hubs, some blamed it on the low spoke count, some blamed it on Rio. Not being a full-blown bike geek, I wasn't sure what they were talking about, and chalked it up to the fact that the other guys must be heavy/hardcore riders while I am a 175 lb. masters/sport class type.

Nevertheless, I never could get the front wheel to stop pinging and popping, and it annoyed me. I lubed each nipple where it passes thru the eyelet, and that helped some, but it started coming back. Then I noticed that the rear wheel was laced with the spoke offset on the wrong side, exacerbating the dish rather than reducing it. When I saw that, I nearly hurled. That was all it took.

Today I took my new Salsa Delgado rim/XTR hub 32 spoke 3x wheelset for its maiden voyage. What a difference! I never knew just what creaky, rickety, floppy wheels the Bontys were. The new wheels are silent, solid, responsive and precise. Yippee!

I'm starting to think Trek has a problem with quality control. The Sugars had their warped frame/chain suck problem. The Bontrager wheels are weak. And some guy is throwing the rims into the hopper upside-down. So much for the "Handmade in USA" label. Sigh.

I built up Salsa Delgatos with XT hubs and DT 14ga (2.0) spokes 36 holes and 3x, Per Marty's (martini) strong recomend. Marty was right pretty light, very responcive. They seem like they will be very durable. I got all black to go with the Surly Karate Monkey' green color.

Anyway I am a Large MTB rider 300 lbs 6'-7" and these rims rock.
