Another case of blown kevlar Nanoraptor bead...(10 posts)

Another case of blown kevlar Nanoraptor bead...Bogus

Well I was forwarned a few months ago by a post noting some defective beads on the new Kevlar Nanoraptors. I just had to try them myself and just got two of them. Nice weight (596 and 598 gms) and they fit nicely on my speed city rims--not as loose as other tires. I was easily able to get them to seal up with Stan's sealant.

I was pumped up, the lightest my 29er has been yet. I headed off on a road ride since it's been raining and the trails are mudsville. I got exactly 3.8 miles down the road and BAMMMM!, the rear tire blew off. The bead was completely blown apart in one spot. No way to fix it or get it to stay on with a tube. I hate walking home in bike shoes...

These tires are not to be trusted.

you missed the other postings about Nano bead failures, they are all attributed to the tires when used with Stan's and WTB never intended for the tires to be used as tubeless.

Have yet to hear of ANY failures with tubes.

Do not blame the tire if you are using it in a way it was not designed for!

UST tires have beefier beads than conventional tires.

I've logged many thousands of miles on nonUST kevlar bead 26" tires--mostly Hutchinson Python Airlights, Scorpion Airlights, and lately Kenda nonUST Kharma's with the Stick-E rubber. Never a bead failure, rarely a flat--always using Stan's system.

I'm no engineer (I did get a minor in physics) and can't understand how the absense of a tube puts that much additional stress on a bead... Please enlighten me.

All previous reports of failure with the Kevlar Nano's stated here on this forum ocurred when trying to run tubeless with the Stan's system. You don't even need to be a college grad to figure out that your chances of having a problem using that setup is going to be pretty good.

Meanwhile riders are having good luck with the Kenda and IRC kevlars with Stan's. Why don't the Nano's work? Who cares, they don't, but why dis the Kevlar Nano because of it? They still are a good option when used with tubes as WTB intended.

Sorry you had to walk home, at least it was only 3 miles.

Of particular note is the fact that the Mavic Speed City rims are quite narrow, which will magnify the problem. I'm sure all of your 26" Stan's setups use rims that are 22-24mm wide, where the Speed City is under 20cm I believe.

The Speed City is NOT designed for 29" tyres. It is designed to put 700x22-28's on a 26" mountian bike. It is a narrow rim designed for narrow tyres.

Sorry, but this is not a design problem with the tyre. It is a misuse problem on your behalf.

As far as how not having a tube puts added stress, it is basically a matter of the inner tube pressing the tyre bead against the rim. The grippy surface of the tube also creates friction between the tube and the tyre, and also the tube and the rim, which helps to resist any movement in the rim/tyre interface.

You're probably right, but I'm sticking to tubeless. I ran the wire bead Nano's on those rims using Stan's for the last few months with only one flat. I was wearing them out and decided to get the kevlar bead version as replacement in my neverending attempt to save weight. They handled my "abuse and misuse" with no problems but were a bit trickier to seal up than the kevlar beaded ones as you can imagine.
And I'm sure this is redundant but...xxlt

I'm running the steel bead version with Stan's and have had no problems what-so-ever. And I REALLY pound em.

Glad to hear you weren't hurt!

don't be bummed when a product doesn't do what it wasn't intended on accomplishing, when you tried to force the issue. i personally don't want wtb to pull out their 29" tire line because people tried to make the square peg fit in the round hole.
