Cold Weather Tips?(8 posts)

Cold Weather Tips?STC Rider
Dec 24, 2003 6:38 AM
To all you cold weather riders out there... I'm relatively new to riding in the cold (0 - 32F), and managing to keep everything warm except those darn feet (shockingly, fingers are behaving). Would love to hear everyone's tricks of the trade so I can keep enjoying my forays into the snow on my 29er. Currently use liners and smartwool socks.

Shoe covers really help as long as it is dry. In the wet and cold it can get very difficult and may take some specialy shoes like the ones from Lake and Sidi.

I usually find something else to do when it gets below freezing. Being in TX that is not very often during the daylight hours.

Too thick of a sock or too many socks that make your shoes fit very tight will make your feet colder. Get bigger shoes or cold weather shoes.

Shoe covers are good. My favorite is the Sidetrak neoprene. You can also use a big wool sock over your shoe and under the cover for extra warmth. Cut a hole in the bottom of the sock for the cleat.

Lake MXZ300 winter shoes are the best if you HAVE to go clipless, but they're not for me when the temp drops. I use Wellgo Mag platforms with shoes/boots of my choice, and I can go down to 65 below so far. Don't insist on clipless if you can't keep warm. Platforms work well. Alaska Pat

Got any pics/info of the neoprene ones you were telling me about with the vibram sole?

Typical winter ride : 3hr, -5C ~ -30C

A winter boot is the best - loose fit with thick socks - if it is tight, it will affect your circulation and make your feet cold. If you run clipless, then you need a good isulator between your foot & cleat plate, a foam insole helps. I'm still using an old dicontinued shimano DH boot - it came with a thick felt insole.

Clothing: Layering, and remove layers as soon as you start sweating, re-layer when you get cold.

Fingers: Pearl Izumi Lobster Claws - by far the best winter riding glove.

Other tips are to leave your bike socks and shoes off until you start to ride - keeps them from getting any sweat in them. Also, try using some antiperspirant on your feet before the ride - it is an old winter hiker trick to keep the feet dry and warm.

For my money, the Lake MXZ300's have far outperformed my Sidi Storm II boots.
