29'er CX question(14 posts)

29'er CX questionSS Jerry
Dec 25, 2003 1:42 AM
Does anyone have experience with a 29'er wheeled CX bike, I would like to know what rims they are using for a wheelset. Also, is it possible to run 700c steet tires on one set of rims and then slide in a set of 29" tires for CX ? What problems would there be?

Thanks

SS Jerry

Jerry;
I do not have a 29er cross bike, however I do ride my 29er in cross races. I simply switch my "mtn" wheelset with my "cross/road" wheelset and I ready. The rim size is the same for a 29" bike and a cross bike 622mm I think. I do however run Disc brakes which makes things much easier. Yes standard road tires work fine. Check out the these pics which show my ride set up with three different tires. I use an XT cassette for mtn use and an Ultegra for road/cross use. I dont even have to adjust the derailluer. Just slide in and go. As far as V or canti brakes go, all you would have to worry about is different rim widths, and how wide the tire is you want to run. Hope this helps.

... and I would die (okay not really) to get a outdoor shot of that baby where you try to be level with the bike! ;)

I have about 10 pics of that bike already and you seem to be 7 ft. 5 as you always look down on it!

I ride a Strong Overlander cross bike and have two different disc wheelsets. Currently one set has michelin prorace road tires and the other has kendakross tires. When it is dry enough to take the fenders off I have WTB 700X44 tires as well. With two different wheelsets using different hubs (American Classic and Chris King) the only adjustment I have to make when switching between the two is to adjsut the avid discs a little bit. This arrangement has worked quite well. I too found that both xt and ultegra cassettes can be used.
Thanks for the answers and great pictures.SS Jerry

The information will help how I set up the next bike project.
