if price is no object, the clear and ONLY choice is of course king disc hubs. Hubs, well, I would go with Salsa Delgato's, that way he can go
disc or V, at his choice.

if price is object, do XT disc hubs. cheap and effective.

as for me, i weigh more than him and I bought one of the lightest hubs on the planet (simmer down all you WW's, I know they aren't THE
lightest), the American Classic L

I agree, I am 300lbs and ride Salsa degato's with 36 DT spokes 3 cross and XT hubs. I don't jump much But I like to ride fast and 75% technical single track. Have a good builder build them, even tension and proper stess releaving is the key. They should hold up. I have yet to true them after a season of riding. Not bad for a $200 wheel set.

I have been up to 210 or so and have had no problems running two wheelsets on my cross bike, which I use for communting and singletrack stuff all last season, first, Alex TD17's laced to American Classic disc hubs (32 spoke) and second, Mavic T520's laced to King disc-go-techs (36 spoke). Both sets have worked quite well.

Hope this helps.

Dude, XTR/Dyads because they have a cool name!fastskiguy2

Yeah, XTR's are great and not super pricy and...although it's a bit of a tough call between the name "dyad" and "delgato"...Dyad's are cool and at 195# my 32 holers are working fine. They make a 36 holer for the heartier appetite<-borrowed phrase.

anybody know what a dyad is?

And which would you rather ride, the nubius dyad? the rhyno? or the cat? Seriously, you put any of'em (or the mavic 5XX (whatever it is) on an XT hub or better, build 'em nice, and you'll be raving "MY XX HUBS AND XX RIMS ARE THE BEST IN THE WORLD" and have a proud sparkle in your eye. You might even find yourself saying "Your YY hubs and YY rims suck, you should get XX hubs and XX rims like me because they rule!" But I'm sure that the YY hubs and YY rims are just fine.

You know, you should really just use what the guys at the shop have in stock. My guy had some Dyads so I like to say "Dyads rule!" And I had a leftover XTR rear hub so I also like to add "XTR hubs kick a$$"

bored yet?

You could say "220# of rhino comin' at ya'" or "I carved up the trail like the delgato" or "As the dyad flies I....(whatever)"

No, no, actually you should never underestimate the bling bling factor. I mean XT/Dyads (I've got one like this btw) PHULEEZE! Everybody knows Kings Rock and everything else Sucks and I choose to spend $500 (or whatever) of my personal productivity on bicycle wheels but cause #1 I can and #2 I'm committed to cycling MORE than YOU! and #3 I've got a bigger **** than you but instead of showing it to you, I'll just buy these wheels.

Ah, after re-reading the post it's YOU building the wheels for a FRIEND. You must know the most important bit of information in this situation is that they must not fail. I mean, the best thing a wheel can do is "not fail", especially when you are building for a friend. I mean, just imagine. "Yeah, I used to be OK until the wheel that dipsh*t built me folded and I broke my ***" Now you and I know that the whole time it was like "but I can save 50 grams if I use ZZ rims" and you're thinking "50 grams? you weigh 220#'s for chrissakes!" You must resist! You must resist!

A dyad is basically a couple, or a pair - any two like things that are treated as one. This term is used in mathematics and chemistry for different things. The chemistry meaning is that some element has a valence or combining power of two, the mathematical meaning is something to do with vectors that I probably can't explain adequately. Exactly why Velocity decided to call a rim this I don't know, I guess the double/bicycle thing goes pretty well.
