| what's your karate monkey weigh? | offroadie Jan 5, 2004 2:29 PM | | i'm not a weight weenie, BUT:
i'm curious what your rigid, singlespeed monkeys weigh? please advise with or without discs. if you've got gears, lemme hear that too. muchas gracias. |
| My KM: 28# 6oz... My Buzz Bomb: 24# 10oz..... you decided | Rigid29erSSguy Jan 5, 2004 6:35 PM | | These comments from my rather un-scientific observations. And yes, I own both.
The KM rides ok. Was a bit unstable on the decents and just did't want to be ridden out of the saddle much. Was more of a get in the rear of the saddle and slog up the hill. Felt much smoother yet sluggish.
The Buzz Bomb rides great.. quick, repsonsive, tons of control on in the corners and downhills. Loves to be ridden out of the saddle. Is a bit harsh as rigid but you get used to it and welcome the extra control. Am actually faster on the decents becuase I just feel safer. Hard to say why
KM: 18"... WB 100mm fork... Paul's Work/Delgado disc wheels... Avid 185mm disc... (these stop almost as good as my Hayes Hydros)
... Icon crank... no name riser bars... XY seatpost...
Single speed running 32 upfront and 20 tooth in back. Nano tires. Frog pedals
Buzz Bomb: 17" rigid fork single speed running 30/20. Surly rigid fork. Bontranger Race wheels with Nano tires. Hayes Hydraulic 160mm. No name crank and bars and stem
... Frog pedals
With deals that Van Dessel is blowing out on the Buzz Bomb, there is no contest in my mind given the performance, weight and cost.
Just my $.02

| The taller gearing on the KM... | shiggy©® Jan 5, 2004 9:33 PM | | ... could account for the "sluggish" climbing, especially combined with the suspension fork and extra few pounds. |
| 24.5 lbs with 185 avid discs | appleSSeed Jan 5, 2004 6:52 PM | | setup as a SS and rigid it's 24.5...that's a weight I can deal with, could be a lb lighter with v's but who wants v's?
and I don't know, maybe dude above me doesn't have the right size, but my Karate monkey feels great all around, it's really stable and fast at the same time. maybe position of the axle in the fork ends affects it? |
| appleSSeed, a few more details? | offroadie Jan 6, 2004 2:19 PM | | what tires are you running? rims? what SSize?
i'd take an 18", so it doesn't seem like it'd be that hard to end up with a rigid single w/ discs around 24 lbs, especially depending on tire choice, eh? |

I think that's about it, plus cables, and headset spacers it's around 24.5lbs. I really forgot about the weight weenieism in me for a bunch of parts but every now and then it gets to me :^) |
| nah, not kansaSS | offroadie Jan 6, 2004 8:39 PM | | my "little" cousin and his little bro went to KU, and my aunt sometimes teaches at K-state (can you even imagine dinner at their house?). i've been to some frat parties at KU but that's it. i'm all about SoCal these days. ;-P
anyway, thanks for the specs. i was thinking an 18" would be the ticket for me @ 6'1" & 34" inseam. my DiSS is a 19" and i rode an 18" km that felt pretty good the shop, but i'll go in for a second opinion before i do the deal.
p.s., i'm waiting for a black one at the end of the month. |
| go with the 20" | appleSSeed Jan 7, 2004 5:44 PM | | I also stepped onto a medium at the shop and was suprised that it acutally felt decent. I'm used to riding 25" top tubes. I'm 6'2" with a 33" inseam and it fits like a glove with a 120mm stem. I'd say go with the Large and a 120 stem or a 110 if you like your cockpits shorter. |

| 24.1lbs | chuckc71 Jan 6, 2004 3:18 AM | | But, I just put a lighter saddle on. It's probably 24 on the dime.

| No I haven't | chuckc71 Jan 7, 2004 9:43 AM | | I just weighed it on a reputable hanging scale at an LBS.
If I get time, I might add all that up. In the meantime, you will just have to trust that on that day, with that scale and before I replaced the seat, the bike weighed exactly 24.1 lbs. |
| re: what's your karate monkey weigh? | fatmarc Jan 6, 2004 4:23 AM | | 24 flat. rigid fork, xtr v-brakes, single speed set up. Just put an suspension for on it, but haven't put it on the scale yet. I'm thinking it'll be close to 26. We'll see. Bike rides like a dream rigid, will probably stick with that, but for longer, more rocky races the fork was needed. respect. |

My Karate Monkey is the best fitting, best handling bike I've ever owned, even with those damn skinny tires. Every time I ride with a group at least one person will say that I'm a different rider on this bike, and I feel like it. I always feel like I'm on the attack, even if I'm riding alone. That was never the case on any other bike I've owned. It's just so damn fast! And I know my fat a$$ isn't fast, so I'm gonna give the bike the credit on this one. It's perfect for the long flats & serpentine rootbeds that we call trails down here in SoFla. And it absolutely rules in blown out sand!!!
And about that rear hub, I highly recommend it for those that kill rear hubs but don't want to drop the coin for a King or Hadley. The freewheel mechanism has proven to be reliable and has less lash than typical shimano fare. The axle is 14mm & slotted for regular 9mm dropouts and features very large nuts and washers with aggressive teeth. It's intended for the DJ scene, but it's my new favorite for the clydes. Also, I've found the going with tied & soldered spokes on big wheels dramatically increases their stiffness. |
| 25.5 lbs, built fairly stout | qtip Jan 7, 2004 7:04 AM | | that's also with h20 bottle cages/pump mounts, and a bunch of mud
I did the weight weenie thing on this and on paper it should be 24.4lbs.
small KM frame/fork
phil wood hubs, rear flip flop
curve cranks
blackspire ring god put on last night (added about half a pound)
time atac pedals
avid mag brakes, sram 9.0 sl levers
easton monkeylite bar
king hs
race face system
motoraptors
could be lighter, but no need....I have a 26" ss that weighs 35+lbs. |
