Im curious as well. I run either 34:19 or 34:20 on my 26er SS. I was thinking something like 32:20 for the 29er.

oh- ride area makes a difference- I ride in socal, so, steep ups (i guess)

thoughts?

32-20 when I'm out of shape or feeling weak.
This diesel motor pushes 32x22 on the niner....Padre

I also started with 32x22 on my niner....fatire

and for the winter, in the hilly stuff we ride, and at my twice a week fitness level....i like it just fine.
as i progress and get stronger from my ss adventures I can see going to a 32x20.
this all assumes 175mm crank-arms if your shorter or longer then your either pushing harder or easier respectively.

running the 22 requires a titanium adapter from spicer cycles to which you bolt a conventional (?? BCD) chain ring to.

i'd really love to find a 21 tooth cog.
anyone know if they're available?

thanks fatty

I shuffle between a few set ups. In the winter and slower times I run a 32X20 (which is roughly the same as 2 teeth easier than 2x1 on a 26er). a 34x20 (roughly the same as 1 tooth easier than 2x1 on a 26er) and a 32x20 (roughly the same as 2x1 on a 26er) for cross I have used a 42x20 for fun....
32:18 here in Texasmojo2396

32:18 seems to fit the bill for me here in Texas.
I was very used to 2:1 on a 26in ss, 32:18 feels pretty good.

I just tried a new ss conversion today with 32/18 and will probably be looking for a 20 if I don't get strong real quick.

I rode real trail today, not overgrown weed lots as I did on the maiden voyage. The 32/18 combination was perfect. Momentum is everything!

I run 2:1 on my 26" SS bikes and thus far I'm finding that I think 34/18 is what I'm going to do on my 29'er for awhile. That may change again when I get to ride more than once a month. Man, I hate cold wet weather. Cold's one thing... wet and muddy is another all together.

Oh, short steep stuff here in the K.C. area. Always either climbing or decending. It's just in 25'-100' elevation changes. Believe me, it adds up at the end of a few miles. Yeah baby.

32:18 on a 29" is close to 2:1 on a 26"...sslos

51.1" gear as opposed to 52" on a 26".
that's what i run down here in sandy eggo. a bit tall for some stuff, but i'm o.k. with the occasional touch of walking.

Big tires measure up somewhere between 28.5-29" in diameter, while little ones are 26-26.5". In other words, almost exactly 10% bigger. Figure on dropping your gear down by 10% to compensate.

Some on this board have stepped up to a slightly taller overall gear, I guess on the idea that they're a little faster on the 29". Maybe, but my 29"er weighs about 3 pounds more than my 26"er, which at least in my case seems to negate any other climbing advantage. 34x22 on the Monkey feels about the same as 34x20 did on the old rig.
