| Asylum: I love this bike. | AK Ken Jan 10, 2004 9:12 PM | | Had a great snow ride on it today; 14 miles on dogsled trails and a wee bit on the Yanert River. I rode with 2 ladies who are always stronger/faster than me and kept up fine, and occasionally left them in the dust. Anecdotal evidence indicates I'm faster on the big wheels on the same trails than I am on 26 inch wheels.
I've added some SnoCat rims since last time, and pressured down the rear Kenda/front Raptor to minimum inflation--when I felt the rim bottoming out on the bumps I added a few pump strokes.
Flotation is okay, but still doesn't seem equal to my 26x2.7s. Control is a little sketchier, too, but a series of linked recoveries can be good for the heart rate.
I had problems with the Fox Float losing air at -22 degrees the other day; today it was fine at +20. I e mailed Chris at Speedgoat about the air loss and he's sending me a coil over shock to use for extreme cold. He has been very receptive to all my input, replaced the original blown Manitou shock immediately, and is doing everything he can to keep me happy.
This has become my favorite bike to ride, even on the snow. It fits well, it feels fast, and I like the handling.

| About that coil shock | Miles Jan 11, 2004 5:20 AM | | Glad to hear you like your ride so much. I had previously asked Chris about the coil shock, and he mentioned that clearance might be an issue. On their regular Racer X bikes Titus does not "allow" a coil shock because the linkage rate lends itself to an air shock. How did Chris get past these issues (special valving or anything on that coil?), and do you notice much difference with the coil on there now? |
| Shock hasn't arrived yet, but | AK Ken Jan 11, 2004 12:18 PM | | Chris said that the spring is wrapped tighter to make a smaller outside diameter.
Time will tell.
