| Ouachita Challenge race | 1 Speed Jan 11, 2004 3:51 PM | | Anyone else on here manage to get signed up? I got the notice from the promoter saying that registration was full now. So, I had to see if my registration had gotten there on time or not. Woo-hoo, it did.
So, next question. Do I dare do this insane race on a single speed?
Thanks,

| 2 yr Veteran here.... | ncj01 Jan 11, 2004 4:28 PM | | I've ridden and completed the Challenge 2 years in a row.
I'm signed up to race this year, but due to my current and projected fitness, I probably should have signed up for the Tour instead of the Race.
I was on 26" last time, but I beleive from my experience on that course and my current understanding of 29er's, that the 29er will be a superior ride for conditions.
I figure I'll be on my Monkey, but my full custom Ti hardtail will probably be in long before then, so I'll no doubt ride it....transation: they'll be an Orange Monkey up for sale in about 2-3 weeks. |
| Yo Mike... | ss jimbo Jan 12, 2004 12:01 PM | | I did this race last year on a fixie cross and the course is ideal for singlespeed. It wasn't even that bad for a cross bike. Feel free to drop me a line through the mtb list (not a bad place for this discussion) and I'll give you some low down. I'll be on my Mute this year, probably coasting. It'll be good to meet another lister (Trish and Kevin are the only two so far).

| quick qualification: | ncj01 Jan 12, 2004 1:55 PM | | take "ideal for SS" with a big grain of salt (about the size of a volkswagon).....in the course of 1 yr jimbo has pretty much enter mythical status for his ability to survive the trails on that bike....be assured, its hilly...hilly as hell, hike-a-bikes, etc....but it does have some serious sweet single track in it....to me ideal for Ss means relatively flat with excellent single track....but clearly i'm on a different level that jim.... |
