| Tightening cleats on pearl izumi vagabonds | rcjonb Dec 7, 2003 11:49 PM | | I got some PI vagabonds, and the shoes have two screw holes towards the heel that are for the cleats, and then two holes toward he toes that have set-screws in them. I haven't figured out what the hell these are for?
I had the cleats come loose on a trail on my first major ride with them, and am wondering if I could have done something improperly as far as fastening the cleats. Thanks.
ps. they're crankbros eggbeater cleats/ mallet c pedals. |

The two holes that are basically under your toes (very close to the front of the shoe) are for spikes (kind like socker spikes), depending on your terrain they could be usefull for doing hike-a-bikes.

You really need to sinch the cleats down hard (but before you do that put some grease on the threads or you're gonna have a hell of a time getting the cleats off after a while of riding). |

I don't mean that far forward...they are directly above the mounting holes for the cleats, i mean they are actually on the same piece of plastic that slides front and back for the cleat mount.
This is a different shoe, but it looks exactly like this. I am not talking about the screws at the very tip of the shoe, but the 4 screw holes in the middle.

When mounting the cleats use grease or antiseize on the bolt threads than tighten very firmly. You may need to tighten again after a short ride as the cleats can sink into the sole of the shoe slightly. |
