| Well, if the bike is in good condition, | Aunt Samantha Dec 8, 2003 4:53 AM | | and you feel you didn't pay too much for it, then it's a good buy for XC riding (whether it's truly a good buy depends on a few things...how much you paid, and your intended use - a DH or FR bike the NRS ain't !!!)
Enjoy it - NRS are pretty nice for their intended purpose :) |
| If you got a good deal and you are happy then you did good | moab63 Dec 8, 2003 9:58 AM | | the condition of the components is important and is hard to access if you dont have the experience, also as long as the bike was designed for what you bought it is ok. I have 4 bikes that I bought new from a few hundred to over 2k. I just bought a used one that was a super deal to me so Im very happy with it. |
| Only if it fits. | JimC. Dec 8, 2003 9:58 AM | | if the bike is too large or small, you've got the equivalent of shoes on sale... but the wrong size. A large frame at 20.5 inches means you have an inseam of around 33" and you're over 6' tall right? Jim |
| Probably the most important point !!! I forgot to | Aunt Samantha Dec 8, 2003 10:51 AM | | forgot to include "fit" on my above list of "a few things" to determine it it was truly a good buy !! Thanks, JimC....can't agree more, and am glad that you see to it to stress that often to newer riders :) |
| from the "I'm an idiot" files | JimC. Dec 8, 2003 11:08 AM | | about 2 years back found a Kona on sale, 17" frame. After lots of pharting around (Layback seat post and longer stem) I bought it after talking myself into it.
Huge B-F mistake, it was too small, I needed an 18" frame. I seem to be a dolt at taking my own advice. Jeez. At least I was able to sell it to a bud... virtually unused, for a few $ less.

| Only if it fits. | choices Dec 11, 2003 2:29 PM | | im some were around 5'10
i think the bike fits me. okay high should the seat be. ive seen some people jack it way up and then ive seen guys low ride whats the right way |
| Re: seatpost height | phil.. Dec 12, 2003 7:12 AM | | A good place to set the seatpost for your first ride:
You want to be able to sit on the saddle and place your foot flat on the pedal when it's in the 6 o'clock position and have your leg fully extended or nearly fully extended.
The amount of post shown doesn't really matter, but you don't want to extend the post past the minimum insertion point (the post will have a mark where this is). If you can't get enough extension before reaching this mark, you probably need a new seatpost. Go out for a ride or two like this, if you feel that the seatpost height is so high that you are bending over to far, you could get a higher rise stem. If the bar feels to high, before buying a new stem you can try flipping the stem, and/or removing spacers below the stem and placing them above.
Having a bicycle "fit" you is about being in a comfortable position on a bike (not sitting too upright/leaned over, not over extended, etc..). Most of the "fit" for a bicycle is in the top tube length, so that you have a comfortable and appropriate reach for your body.
Getting something that fits really well is sometimes difficult with your first bike. If you feel like it doesn't "fit" you, try taking it to a bike shop and tell them what you are experiencing and they can help you out, or you can ask the board here and I'm sure you'll get some advice.
Good luck. |
| Complicated stuff | C-Ling Dec 12, 2003 10:38 PM | | you went big on your first purchase. You've got some sophisticated stuff and new technology (tubeless). Hope it all works out. I would recommend starting simple and inexpensive for your first bike but that's totally up to you. frankly bikes frustrate the hell out of me but i like riding them, enjoy. |
