| KONA bikes | PMiriamH2 Dec 8, 2003 2:42 PM | | I've heard Kona bikes are pretty good, but also very expensive...could you guyz give me some info on a good starter bike for dirt jumps and hard terain...(hardtail) also do u have any tips on jumps...im looking for a bike for about between $500-$800 THANX!! |
| re: KONA bikes | seely Dec 8, 2003 3:24 PM | | Actually, Kona's tend to be on the low end of the price spectrum for their components. If you compare their bikes in the $500 range to Specialized's $500 bike its probably going to have a better fork and drivetrain.
That being said for dirtjumps the Scrap/Stuff/Roast are really Kona's best. The Stuff and Roast have better forks and drivetrain so I think the Stuff is probably worth the extra $$$ over the Scrap. As I recall its around $600 or so if you shop around a bit. Finding last year's model will save you quite a bit and there is little if any difference.
As for jumping wear armor and learn how to be smooth... it'll save your bike and legs. Start small and work up. |
| Good, strong frames with cheaper componentry | Drewdane Dec 8, 2003 4:01 PM | | That's the rap I've heard at least.
I still miss my '94 Lava Dome that got stolen... |

$699 full list price.
You'll get the exact price instead of some hearsay from somebody who doesn't know squat.
You can get jump pointers over at nsmb.com, search under Jay Hoots.
Good luck, Jim |
| just watch out for the VisaVisa model... hehehe | KonaMan Dec 24, 2003 10:10 AM | | I've owned 3 frames (LavaDome, ManoMano, Stinky6). Loved them all, only have the ManoMano remaining as my riding interests have shifted (again). the next Kona to my list will be a Jake... |
| re: KONA bikes | Franky Rizzo Dec 16, 2003 9:20 AM | | Don't go with a Kona XC bike if you are over 200lbs. The chainstay will kink. They warrantied it no problem through my LBS and they say that the 2004 has fixed the problem. |
