Changing pedals(2 posts)

Changing pedalsRemsen
Dec 12, 2003 3:55 PM
I just bought a new Jamis Dakar Sport and I want to change the pedals...it came with a pair of Wellgo clipless pedals and I thought I'd try them out before making any decisions (I've always rode platform pedals prior to buying this bike). I've decided that while I may learn to use clipless pedals at some point, I want to have the platforms on the bike for most uses. I see that the Crank Bros Mallet C has a hybrid design and it's something that I'd like to put on my bike. The question is: should I attempt to change the pedals myself? This bike has an allen head fitting at the point on the crankarm where the pedal attaches and I was told that all I'd need is an appropriately sized allen wrench to change the pedals. Is this correct? Do I need some torque wrench type of device to determine how tight to put the pedal on? I'm a total novice at this and any advice on whether I should try this myself or how to do it would be appreciated. Thanks.

You can't go wrong with a torque wrench but it isn't really necessary for pedals. Get them tight enough so they won't loosen and you'll be fine.
