| Tires for the road (and rain) | purplecow Dec 13, 2003 11:13 PM | | I end up riding my mtb a lot on the roads sometimes and was thinking about getting another set of wheels with different tires for city riding.. I also ride in the rain sometimes. I was wondering would an 'atb slick' tire do the trick, or do I need a little tread or something to channel the water away in the rain? How thick/thin should I go? 1.25"? Less? Should I be looking at road tires?
Is there anything special I need to know, or can I just pick an inexpensive pair of 26" rims, tires (and rim strips) and hit the road?
Thanks. For reference I have a GF Marlin. |

This may be a silly question, but I'll need another identical set of cogs installed on the new rear wheel, right? Otherwise I'd have to remove the cogs each time.. |

Also the cogs do not have to be identical- heck you could even use a road cassette if you wanted- depends if you want different gearing for the road or not. Note the rear derailuer setup maybe not be spot on for the second set of wheels, but should be good enough- especially in the less demanding road environment. |

I have been riding a pair for about a year and I like them a lot, they roll well and they have just enough tread so I don't have to worry when it rains. Also, if you are concerned with punctures and don't mind adding a little wieght to your bike, I highly recommend getting a set of tire liners. Here's a link to set from performance http://www.performancebike.com/shop/cboProfile.cfm?SKU=2295 but there are tons of other choices out there that will do the same thing.
Good luck |
| Kenda Kozmik Lite | Chas Dec 14, 2003 1:01 PM | | Went through the same thing. Initially tried WTB Racing Raptors but found they were too thin and flatted way too easily on road debris. Moved to Kenda Kozmik Lites. A enough tread for off road use but minimal enough for high speed road rides. Great durability too. |
