what is 40a? (tire)super Y

what are those numbers on the tires? (40a, 42a?)
what is different?
insufficient information to respond, any other #s there?club

what type, size, make and model is the tire in question? 42 could possibly be its width in millimeters if it's a pretty narrow mtb tire, or a pretty fat 700C cross tire. no clue what the A stands for.

They are the one I can think of that adds the "a" to the number.

It is the hardness of the rubber compound. Lower the number, softer the tread. 40 & 42 is usually a downhill tire. XC tires are usually in the 60-70 range.
