Will this crankset fit?(2 posts)

Will this crankset fit?fatnbald1
Dec 20, 2003 3:45 PM
I just purchased a Shimano Deore crankset for my bike, and I'd like to know if my old one I'm replacing will fit on my wife's bike? I know the chainring sizes are different on hers, so would that mean that the crankset would not fit at all? Or will it fit with a new chainsize or other mod? Thanks ahead of time.

... to consider when you do this... and unfortunately not all of them are easy. But here's few things to look for that may help you answer that question:

* BB/Crank interface:
This should be an easy thing to check especially if the existing BB/crankset is of the square taper interface type. If your wife's bike and your existing crank are square taper, then odds are good it will fit.

* 8-sp or 9-sp:
What are the gear counts for yours and your wife's bike? If you both run 8-sp (or both run 9-sp) then again, odds are good it will fit. If you're running 9sp and she's running 8-sp (or maybe 7-sp), it's still a good chance it will fit. But she's running 6-sp or less, there might be compatibility issues. It may install and "fit", but it may not run smoothly.

* Chainline:
This is a little more difficult to quantify. But let me try to (over-)simplify it. Cranksets are designed to run at a specific chain alignment (i.e. chainline) so that the shifting from one gear to another is efficient or smooth. If the crankset is not installed and adjusted to the proper chainline range then shifting will be very poor. I think the best way for us to address this issue is if you could provide info on what setup your wife's bike uses, and the crank you plan to install on it (i.e. your existing crank).

Hope that helps,
Randy
